I was being naive when i saw race in european middle ages i thought this was gonna be about horse racing, boy was i wrong

Premodernist

That's a difficult question to answer and no one knows for sure. In my opinion it happened with the Atlantic slave trade and European imperialism.

Madhav Nair

You mentioned that if a person of color were to travel to the middle ages, they would not be faced with the kind of racism that we observed in the 19th and early 20th century. I was wondering what did lead to this negative shift in attitude towards people of color?

Anschel Schaffer-Cohen

Discuss racism even briefly in a youtube video: flood of racist comments Patreon video almost entirely about racism, with a short aside about having a mustache: comments are almost all about the mustache

Premodernist

Lol. Yeah, it looks better when I wear a jacket.

Amber O'Hanley

Great video. For a moment I thought you had just escaped from prison.

Amber O'Hanley

It may be worth reading Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. It's a very influential book which essentially argues that most philosophy is the result of language confusion.

As far as I know, Roma started arriving in Europe in the 1400s, and I believe they were mainly in Ottoman-held lands for a while after that. I could be mistaken though.

shoshana

just do what your wife asks..but if you look scary we’ll let you know😈

Jborgzz

Were Roma people treated along the same lines as you describe Jews in medieval Europe? It seems to me if someone wanted to argue for racism (as we understand it today, along lines of phenotypical features,) how that group was treated would be one area to examine. For example, are you aware of any sources saying a Roma family was “integrated” into a town?

Great video! That book from the 1100's you mention near the end sounds really interesting. And the excerpts you read made it sound like it has a pretty contemporary writing style. Will have to look into that. I support any and all facial hair decisions. That question would also have made for a hilarious Patreon poll.

Premodernist

I might try that next

Gregor

I will integrate "May God abominate them!" into my regular vocabualry

Premodernist

Thank you so much!

Ben Gercak

This will be a hot take, but I want to see what you would look like clean-shaven. I say go no facial hair then grow in mustace later lol

i’m always amazed on Americas pure size. the range of ‘culture’ from state to state or coast to coast is so crazy. i could talk about it for hours. great video!!! you’re really one of my favorite creators, and stick with the rambling - it’s the best. i feel like i’m back at college office hours with a ‘cool’ professor. as for facial hair feedback - i like the current look, but a stash is always a fun switch up!

America’s size is “the size of a continent” is so true, actually Sun-Yet sun made a lot of comparisons between USA and China.I think this also true nowadays, because Russia and Canada are larger but their lands are not very populated, unlike China and US.

Premodernist

Congratulations! That's a fun age. I'm glad I can help you pass the time and feel some connection to the world of grownups.

Premodernist

Thanks! I've always liked the beard.

Premodernist

Thanks!

Premodernist

Thank you!

Premodernist

Thanks! It's weird how long-lasting those prejudices can be.

Premodernist

Yes, I think you're right.

Was so excited to see an hour long video was waiting for me to open! I had mentioned in the last video to let the tangents run free, and I stand by it. We have a 4 month old baby I’m coming off my share of parental leave watching while the wife has already spend her 12 weeks, so these videos are great to put on in the evening and have an intellectual (one sided) conversation. Don’t worry about spending too much time editing things out, or stress about the addition of visuals. Those of us that are here are here to spend some time “hanging out” with you. Your mustache question just made me realize I missed the opportunity to see what I look like with a clean shave with no consequences during my paternity leave. I say go for it. It can always grow back

I took a few philosophy classes back in college, but I became disillusioned with the field because it seemed like so much of it boiled down to arguing about what words should mean. And as you said, those kind of arguments are annoying! (Caveat that I doubt my limited undergraduate exposure was representative of the field; I’m just recounting the impression I had at the time.)

Amanda Parrish

Missed an opportunity to yell, "Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!"

Martin Tepper

Great video, love the "rambly" format and this is a great topic I'd like to dive even more deeply into - exactly the kind of thing where history can make it clear how many mental blinders we always have on :) And about "Operation 'Stache": I would like to think that it ought not to make a difference to Youtube performance...but I wouldn't bet on it X) And obviously it's your choice! But my personal taste is for your current look, I feel it looks quite distinguished in a unaloof way.

Kevin Love Hewitt

Do the giant mustache thing! 🙏

Gary Cohen

Moustache it. 😀

Elly Gis

Never apologize, your videos are "rad"

Elly Gis

hahaha my thoughts exactly

Melanie

I love this video, please don't apologise for rambling. You can speak for hours as far as I'm concerned. The roads you wander down are ones I would not know to find regardless of whether they are accessible to me. Also, your hair, your choice!

Dionis Jahjaga

Unsubscribing immediately if Project: Tom Selleck isn’t guaranteed.

Adan Altamirano

Thanks for talking about this. As a Jew, I am experiencing similar prejudices today in a Christian world as my ancestors did then. Love your content, the medeival period is infinitely interesting!!

mroom

2 vids in under 2 weeks, fantastic

ty zj

Great!

Thomas Pellino

Great video. I think we have about a 70 year window that we as a culture can remember things. If it falls out of that window, we start to retroactively apply our definitions and things get weird. Maybe a bit longer than 1 lifetime.
