I always envy Americans when they talk about who their ancestors were like 200 or 400 years ago. In Poland, this is usually a privilege of those few of noble descent. With my own reserach I was only able to go as far back as WW1.

Really enjoyed the video! I’m from Liverpool with some Glaswegian family. I’m new to the Patreon & not sure if I get to suggest ideas at this tier, but I thought I’d throw one out there - a Halloween video for October could be really fun, maybe looking at its roots in the Celtic festival of Samhain.

I think that the American/Canadian interest in a (often imagined) historical European culture has to at least in part stem from a perceived lack of preindustrial culture to relate to. Indigenous culture is rarely taken as seriously as preindustrial European culture, so people have to look outward for something to identify with. I think that even with a near cultural hegemony Americans are still a bit self conscious about lacking that "deeper history", and that makes them more susceptible to the natural human tendency to romanticize what they imagine the past to be like, rather than the real thing. Indigenous culture is only a flanderization of itself in the population imagination (and isn't substantively taught in most schools), which feels like a detriment to getting WASP types interested in it.

So when the kilt came around during the 1800s, was there no trepidation at ditching trousers for this new garmnet? I recognize they had this more traditional large cloak, but I imagined that was worn as an overcoat style garmnet over trousers. And for non-highland people who didn't even wear the cloak, I'm surprised this more traditional society didn't find it odd to go from pants to a skirt. Or were they not big on trousers at the time then either? But then what were they wearing instead? As a modern person, I have trouble imagining a time after the common era when people didn't just wear pants and view that as the default option
