The North Pacific is a very cold and forbidding place and the Chinese didn't have any incentive to travel up there. It's true that people in the Arctic traveled back and forth, but they didn't have much contact with people farther south.

I have a question which sounds very naive but I’d rather just ask it than state my educated guesses: Why didn’t China know about America in the medieval era? Alaska isn’t that far off. And weren’t some Alaskan people in contact with the people of Chukchi? It seems like knowledge of Alaska could have spread further if there was any kind of trade or contact between China and the north.
