Hmm maybe. You might also notice that Falkner leaves out the part where his own pokemon failed to stop and only mentioned Ran's faux party, aassuming ofc Ran's pov was trustworthy

Honestly, Bugsy feels kinda hypocritical in a lot of ways. He acknowledges that the old sponsor challenge was heavily luck based then gives Ran shit about how Bugsy... 'outperformed' him by getting lucky and getting a fucking scyther? And I know that he's deliberately trying to get under spencer's skin, but Bugsy is the *last* person to be giving people shit about being carried by naturally powerful pokemon. I bet he made it at least 3 badges before he needed to actually try with a fucking scyther.

Interesting, it looks like things aren't nearly as copacetic behind the scenes as Ran had thought they were. The old gym leader leaving Bugsy in the lurch like that was... what was his deal? Did he actually want Clarence to win and when his preferred heir didn't then he left Bugsy holding the bag? In regards to the sponsored trainer test, while his method is a bit more fair, I think that Bugsy was a little premature in awarding the sponsorship without seeing how the Kakuna and the trainer had bonded as well as how it had evolved. The attempts to get under Spencer and Ran's skins shows that Bugsy doesn't rally "get" other people. He doesn't seem able to extend an open hand without hiding a barb in the message somehow. Falkner having to point out the obvious regarding *why* Ran and Spencer might be holding grudges was face-palm worthy. And I'm kind of curious who Bugsy got the Skorupi from. My first thought was Aaron, the Big-specialist Elite 4.

Oh it's understandable that Bugsy would prioritize himself and the Gym. It's more when he does decide to do anything with Ran? It is very mixed even when he's trying to be nice. Offers a reward? Also has a threat of making Rans journey harder. Offers good advice? Also says get over it in a bad way. So more Bugsy better not be surprised if Ran still doesn't like him even with the stuff he gave him.

The issue with every character-narrator is reliability of course, how truthful is anyone being at a given time? I'd personally rule Bugsy as the most reliable of the three narrators we've seen so far and Spencer comfortably being the least reliable. Bugsy's people skills aren't great. Specializing in bug-types likely plays a part in that. But I do feel like we can forgive him *to a degree*. He's fifteen and he's just ascended to a position where he's the head honcho for an entire town + surrounding area and a top-15 authority figure in the region. With the previous guy actively dropping him in the deep end rather than staying around to smooth the transition. If we look at things from an outsider's perspective rather than with a Ran bias, it becomes somewhat understandable that Ran and Spencer don't exactly make the top of Bugsy's priorities.

Maybe his lack of empathy is a result of bug type energy?

Somewhat makes Bugsy look better but not by much. Still Somewhat of a ass. More focused on himself than others and not a lot of Empathy if any at all. Was the previous gym really that bad or is bias getting in the way? Like they had good talent but Bugsy kinda overshadowed them and didn't really get opportunities. Which could be more the previous leaders fault. Though Bugsy doesn't really have a good opinion even though he got said opportunities from said previous leader.

Bugsy seems to be more relatable after this. Though it seems to me he might have some personal bad experiences with poison types. Falkner seems to be a great guy.

And here's the Contributor reward for the month of October! I'm personally inclined to release this to the public a few days after Chapter 9 part 2, but I am always open to feedback from all of you, paying supporters, as to how to treat early access vs. exclusivity. As for the actual contents: At a bit over 6k, this came out a fair bit bigger than my planned 4k-ish monthly contributor awards, but as long as everyone understands that this is an exception rather than the new norm, I figure it's alright. I hope this provides SOME insight into Bugsy and what he's up to. Both his good intentions AND his flaws (like empathy, for example). As this IS a Contributor award that wasn't a planned part of the main narrative, please do feel free to offer feedback and let me know if you feel like there's any major things missing or if there's anything in here that doesn't mesh/click.
