Heraclitus

It does. I keep forgetting that you're leaning on biased and unreliable narrators a lot of the time. Good stuff!

The Dave

It is an island, yes, Bugsy's choice of words isn't entirely correct. But at this time in the verse, the pokémon world is pretty small, so even just a whole other island *feels* like a continent due to being far away + exotic, if that makes sense?

Heraclitus

Is Sinnoh a continent here? I thought it was just an island off the coast of Poke-Japan, a la Hokkaido. Also, Drappion is a great pokemon, but man does it look goofy as heck, imo.

Kris Boxall

Bugsy really do be bugging everybody. Thanks for the chapter!

The Dave

Upon re-reading, I actually meant that *Confusion* is super-effective on Spinarak, rather than the other way. Edited slightly to clarify. Sorry for the mix-up, been a while since I wrote the scene after all.

The Dave

That's a fair point to such a degree that I'm gonna have to fix the mistake. He *would* know those things. On mobile now so will fix later, but genuinely thanks for the feedback

Wiggy

Sadly sounds like Bugsy's here to stay in some capacity given the end of the omake...

Wiggy

I guess the purple puffball throwing around psychic moves being a psychic type wouldn't be that unbelievable if you didn't know a lot about bug types. Would have thought ran would have done some research on indigo poison types and been aware of this mon at least lol. Venomoth is one of the better poison types in early gens

The Dave

Correct. This is another case of Ran being wrong and being an unreliable narrator. Because I genuinely believe that we, fans of Pokémon with games and wikis at our disposal, are significantly more knowledgeable than most actual trainers would be.

Wiggy

Oh, btw, shadow sneak isn't super effective on venonat. They use a lot of psychic moves but they're not actually psychic.

Wiggy

Jeez, every time we encounter Bugsy he just pisses me off more.

DiscoT

The lack of self-awareness in Bugsy is quite baffling as well. He truly thinks he "outperformed" Ran when he just lucked out with a scyther. I'm happy to move away from Azalea and Bugsy in general, i don't like him at all and he should stay in his lane and get his feet back on planet earth.

The Dave

Yeah, Ekans needed to be in this fight. If he hadn't been, Ran's starter would've seen no action for the first 2 gym battles of their shared career. With Ekans more than likely having picked up on some of the stigma towards his 'limited' potential as espoused by Spencer, that'd have done terrible things for his self-confidence. As it stands, he's still going to be dealing with not being the first team member to evolve. Ran is definitely going to need to be doing research, especially with info on Sinnoh-native pokémon still being relatively tough to find. As for the Spinarak tip... Well that you'll have to find out in time. Bugsy may want to talk things out, but Ran is not in the right headspace to even entertain the idea of a private conversation (yet).

Like Bugsy got a point on moving on but the way he said it wasn't good. Like sure just totally get over almost losing his chances to be a trainer. Ekans going out wasn't just for Ran but for Ekans too. Like yeah Golbat probably better pick but Ran is actually letting his team do things they want to do. It's called caring and being a team. Imagine Ran's bias is there a lot but Bugsy didn't exactly look good even if the bias wasn't there.

MaliMi

So he made it harder, probably to force him to use his Golbat. Anyway the Skorupi is going to be interesting since it is a great pokemon, but it is also a gift from Bugsy, which Ran might not be thrilled about.

TempestK

Very nicely done. I can see why Ran went with Ekans, he wanted to prove not only to Bugsy but to himself and his starter that everything they'd gone through had been worth it in the end. Ran took a risk with String Mine, but in this case it paid off, slowing Scyther down just enough to let Ekans get a grip on him and set up for the final blows. The deception with the pre-set orders and command codes was incredibly well executed, I imagine that Bugsy only barely caught on to Stockpile being used. Cool, I called it about the Skorupi, though Ran's probably going to have a bit of an uphill battle initially since it doesn't evolve until late. I expect that Ran is going to want to do some research on his new team member asap. The tip about leaving Spinarak out at night... I have no clue if that's a hint that it'll help her evolve, or if it'll lead Ran to an encounter of something rarely seen. Like the Budew that only show up in Heart Gold and Soul Silver when playing the "Sinnoh Sounds" radio station. It'd make for a hell of an addition to his team in terms of versatility and power. I really hope that Bugsy and Ran actually talk things out in private; because right then Bugsy had Ran kind of trapped from really being able to express himself due to the crowds.

The Dave

Yeah finding that right balance is definitely a thing I'm finding challenging. There's things like anti-poison bias, other characters having other concerns (Bugsy in particular has that excuse to defend himself with) and Ran being an unreliable narrator to factor in though, people aren't necessarily as totally unsympathetic as Ran perceives them to be.

Vi Slater

this style of story and character are such powerful ones, aggrievement at a perceived injustice is a powerful way of motivating a character and bringing in an audience. Its nice to see that Bugsy has kept his side of the deal as it were, a foreign pokemon like Drapion really is quite the boon to give. The one thing Ive noticed coming up on repeat is that while people aren't strictly *wrong* in how they talk to Ran about his motivations, there's a repeat issue with folks being incredibly unsympathetic about it. Its a hard line to walk to balance the characters core motivation of righteous spite and a believable world/characters

The Dave

Sorry for being a bit later than usual, had a RL engagement. But hey, big, eventful update! I hope you all enjoyed the read, feel free to share your thoughts. Keep an eye out, the Bugsy POV from the Contributors Omake poll should also drop later today!
