Venonat is definitely a step up, especially with the inherent type-advantage, though I should clarify that it isn't *completely* beyond the pale. It is ultimately a 'base'/unevolved form bug-type that can somewhat reasonably be sent out a second-badge tier. For comparison purposes, a second-badge tier against Falkner means you're probably going up against a Pidgeotto somewhere in his selection. That said, Bugsy's obviously got his reasons for departing from his previous 'norm'.

Throwing out the *powerful* psychic using bug against a poison specialist is a real dick move. It's a second badge. Venonat is *not* a low level pokemon. This is more the kind of stuff I'd have expected if Bugsy had actually gone through on his threat to blacklist him to the gyms. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Bugsy's up to because he just keeps pushing buttons. On another note, hilarious that Ran's plan is basically just to do Bugsy's own strat back at him.

Hmmm Bugsy is obviously now using pokemon to better suited against Rans pokemon. Though this could easily be taken in a bad light even if this has good intentions. Going against the norm for Ran will get raised eyebrows.

... oooooh shit. Venonat line learns psychic moves. So Bugsy wants to see how he deals with getting thrown a major curveball that he doesn't have an immediate counter to.

Golduck boy was throwing his weight around yeah. Dickish, but also distressingly common when giving people status/power over others. Bugsy did know they were watching, but there's also the Venomoth-line's learnset to consider and how that matches up with Ran's specialization. Karolina isn't going to work as a rival indeed, but that isn't her purpose (at this time). It'll be a pretty long time before she becomes a more significant figure in the story, but introducing her here once again reinforces the idea that Ran's story is just one of a great many. Also a reminder for everyone that, just because the season's still in its starting stages, that doesn't mean everyone is battling at a low-badge level at the moment.

Took me a moment to realize why he wanted a Moon ball. Guess he's going after a Nidoran♂? Or does he just want a Nidoran of either gender? Nidoking is less bulky but is able to strike harder, but Nidoqueen has a slight defensive advantage. Surprised that Josie didn't go after one of the pokeball variants for capturing fast pokemon, pokemon the opposite gender of her mon that's out, or even heavy balls since most fire types are either fast or heavy. Golduck boy was kind of a dick huh? ... Bugsy knew they were watching, and on top of that he's probably looking to prove to Ran that he deserved this position. Which is why he deviated from his norm. Plus Bugsy is aware of Ran's mon and that the normal methods aren't going to work so he's going to have to use Venonat's powders to allow him to inflict stuff like paralysis and sleep rather than the webs and stringshots that he's so used to dealing with thanks to Spinarak. Keeping things in more of a condensed, concise recounting of things makes sense here because Ran is kind of hyper-focused on the match with Bugsy. Not only that but this is his home town, so there's not a lot to grab his focus after showing Josie the two major attractions outside of the gym itself. Especially since she isn't going to be interested in the Slowpoke Well due to her specialty. Interesting that you're introducing a new character here. I wonder why she's teleporting around? Maybe looking to avoid any attention? But given the power disparity between the two trainers, I'm kind of wondering what the point in giving her a detailed description and a name are. She can't exactly work as a rival in this instance. Not unless something *drastic* happens.

The Dave

Keeping things relatively brief in Azalea as far as the lead-up to the Gym battle is concerned. Ran's too familiar with the place and there's too little going on to want to spend too much time here. Which means Sunday, Ran vs. Bugsy is happening! Of course it's at a second badge tier rather than the large main event that'll be pursued at some point in the distant future, but a badge is still always going to be a milestone in its own right.
