I forgot to put it on last chapter, but I like that Grady seems to be meshing well in the public sphere with Josie and Ran. It's a fun little trio, of the loud and excitable Eletric type, the loud and brash fire type, and behind them, the quiet and vengeful poison type. If they add a 4th specialist to their team I'm going to start calling them a ready made New Elite 4 lmao. Also, I'm certainly hoping those books turn out useful for our boy Ran. I like the idea of letting Ekans hold the Black Sludge. With Coil, Stockpile and Swallow the item would allow him to pass as a poor mans wall.

I mean, it could just be an non Pokemon bird beak infused with the energy by a strong Flying type. Unless you think all meat is coloned flesh or something

Interesting. I can see why Black Sludge would be something of a controlled substance. Trainers using it on pokemon with the Guts ability or that have moves boosted by being affected by a status like Endeavor. Especially if there are less painful ways to make it work like paralysis.

Fair enough, I guess it's just one of those world building things that stick out to me. Especially something that's problematic in a few ways like the sharp beak. The 'natural resource' held items can be hand waved away fairly easily (charcoal, miracle seed, never melt ice) but a presumable body part just takes me out of the narrative a fair bit. Same with the goofy ones: black glasses and silk scarf/pink bow. Much harder to accept those one at face value than even something like the dragon fang, where I can imagine it being something regularly shed or broken off in the wild. But a beak? That's like having a fighting type booster called the strong fist, which is literally a severed fist, ya know?

Definitely lackinga defensive wall, but Ran's bought Black Sludge as a current investment. Teambuilding, with Skorupi's recent addition, is on pause for the moment.

I figure that at this time, Ran doesn't actually *know* how those items work. To his mind, knowing that they do is enough (for now). I'm definitely not keeping all game mechanics, but held items feel like they add another layer of "haves and have-nots", not to mention that they do add another opportunity for trainers to diversify their approaches. That said, Ran eventually finding out more about how held items work might be an interesting tidbit to bring up later on.

I like the focus on their off types for the held items since they naturally can rely on STAB for their poison moves. Black sludge was a surprise tho, maybe a hint towards a certain future member of the team? Still lacking a defensive wall atm.

Heraclitus

To be fair on the Sinnoh's Stars book, if the timeline here follows anything like the game's general timeline, then Aaron probably isn't an Elite Four yet. Ran definitely lucked out on the other two, if skorupi's habitat on bulbapedia isn't lying. I do think it would be interesting to expand on held items a bit. Like, what even is silver powder? Why does it boost bug type moves? And sharp beak? Yikes, that's potentially more than a bit macabre, when you think on it. Are people harvesting beaks from powerful flying type pokemon? And why would beaks seemingly hold so much flying type energy that they permanently hold on to it years after being separated from, maybe, the pokemon it came from. Is is treated somehow? Wouldn't a feather of some kind make more sense? Stuff like that. Imo, It feels a bit lazy to just put game mechanics into the world you're crafting without really ironing the creases out. Even a line about how charcoal is made from the remnants of controlled forest fires started by powerful fire-type pokemon. Or mystic water is collected from a very old lagoon where Lugia was often spotted in the past. Something, to make us go, 'yeah, that makes sense why it would boost type-energy'. All that being said, a fun chapter all around. I did find the line about spending so much money before Whitney to be a bit funny. To just assume he'd so easily win and re-up his finances against the dreaded Darth Whitney and her evil Miltank.
