I was still frozen and teary eyed from the shock and humiliation of my spanking when Miss Turner grabbed my hand and promptly escorted me to the corner of the daycare room.
“Why don’t you take a little time out in the corner to calm down from your little tantrum. When you’re ready, you can let Mrs. Hicks know you’re ready to return to the group to start playing with all your new friends,” Miss Turner said, pointing out the room’s teacher.
Teary eyed and sniffling, I nodded and complied. Partially because I knew I didn’t have a choice. Partially because I did just want to finish crying in the corner alone, as pathetic as I knew it was.
To drive my new status home, she also confiscated my phone before leaving the room, leaving me truly nothing to do but sniffle in the corner like a naughty toddler.
The minutes passed as I spent my time wiping tears away and feeling more and more sorry for myself. I was still totally shocked that Miss Turner could punish me like that. Even more so, that my Mom was supposedly on board with such measures…
I kept my gaze glued to the floor or at the corner, too embarrassed to look any of the other kids playing and running around behind me in the face. I could still sense them staring, pointing, and giggling at me while I sat there. I could hardly believe I was already the class loser… even though I was over twice their age!
I felt trapped and helpless and alone. But ultimately, I knew I just needed to suck it up and get through with this whole humiliating ordeal my Mom was putting me through.
After all, I was still holding on to hope that my Mom would tell me that night the whole thing was over. That I didn’t actually have to go back the next day or ever again because I had clearly learned my lesson.
After what must have been around an hour (it was hard to tell as there were no clocks in sight), the room’s teacher, Mrs. Hicks, approached me. “Alright, hon, that’s enough corner time. I’m sure you’ve calmed down by now. Why don’t you go ahead and play and make some friends.”
At first, I assumed she was being nice. And I was about to tell her no thanks, that I much preferred to continue sulking in my corner alone, like a baby.
But when I looked up, I got the sense that Mrs. Hicks wasn’t asking me to go play. She was telling me to go play. And if I had learned anything that morning, it was that I never, ever, wanted to disobey one of the daycare staff members ever again.
“Okay,” I grumbled, slowly getting to my feet.
I took a deep breath and reluctantly looked around the room for what else I could possibly do.
Of course, I immediately had absolutely no interest in participating in any of the juvenile toys, board games, and arts and crafts I could see on offer.
But after spending a few minutes quietly wandering the room for something to make me look busy, something finally caught my eye that I thought might actually entertain me without my phone…
A computer.
It looked old—ancient, really—but I could see one of the kids playing computer games on it. It was clear the computer was there for the daycare attendees to use.
At first I considered asking the kid using it if I could use it after him. But I held off, too scared to ask. As pathetic as it was, my fragile ego was terrified of being humiliated if he laughed at me again for the spanking I got earlier.
Instead, I hovered a little ways back and carefully watched, waiting for my chance to hop on after him.
I learned the kid’s name was Georgie after another kid said hi to him. Georgie seemed a little bit older than the others. And I was starting to get the sense that he was a bit of a bully. Over the next hour or so, I watched some of the other kids in the room ask Georgie if they could have a turn, only for Georgie to tell them no and bully them into going away.
As I continued watching Georgie play from half-way across the room, I began growing more eager to get to use the computer myself. I could see him playing games like Frogger and typing tutor—games I now remembered from my own childhood—and I was really starting to want a chance to play.
I also began to sense that Mrs. Hicks was watching me, seemingly irritated that I was still just sitting by myself and not ‘playing’, as she had subtly ordered me to do, which was also making me anxious about finally getting to ‘play’ on the computer.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, Georgie abruptly leapt to his feet and ran across the room. I saw him go into the bathroom and I knew it was my chance.
I immediately jumped on the computer and began clicking around to see what the old machine had to offer.
The computer wasn’t connected to the internet, so scrolling facebook was off the table. But I booted up one of the old computer games, hoping to have a little nostalgic fun.
And to my surprise, after just a few short minutes, I was already having a blast! Soon, I was tearing through levels of Frogger with abandon.
Suddenly, I heard Georgie’s voice over my shoulder as he returned. “Hey! I was playing on the computer. Give it back!”
I shrugged. “The computer was open when I sat down.”
“But I was just using it! I only got up for a second. Now come on, give it back, I was right in the middle of a game,” Georgie whined.
“Too bad, you’ve been hogging it all morning,” I said.
“No I haven’t! Everyone knows that I get to play on the computer as long as I want,” he shouted.
“I guess I’m not everyone, then,” I laughed.
“Give it back, crybaby!” Georgie said as he lunged to grab the mouse.
But despite his insult in reference to my traumatic morning, I still easily rebuffed him and pushed him away. “For a crybaby, I’m still twice your size,” I laughed.
“Come on, this isn’t fair!” Georgie whined. “I can’t help that I suddenly had to go pee real bad…”
“Aww, poor baby, did you have to go race to the bathroom cause you were scared you were gonna have an accident and wet your pants? Who’s the cry baby now?” I teased. “Now get lost, pip-squeak.”
Georgie’s jaw dropped. I knew he was furious. But I didn’t care. In fact, I was loving every moment of getting my revenge for that morning and finally showing these little brats whose boss.
I grinned with satisfaction as Georgie marched away in anger. We both knew I had won, and there was nothing he could do about it.
With Georgie gone, I resumed playing video games, soon blissfully disappearing into the screen and forgetting all about the little pest.
In fact, I even started to forget about the horrible embarrassment of my spanking that morning.
I even stopped worrying so much about whether or not I was going to have to actually spend the rest of my whole summer at the stupid daycare center. So long as I could lose myself on the computer all day, and boss the other kids around, of course, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad, after all.
I finally began to relax and enjoy myself since arriving that morning.
But unfortunately, it was when I was just starting to finally get comfortable, that my fate for the summer took a drastic turn for the worse, for reasons I could have never possibly predicted…
* * *
While staring at the computer, I suddenly heard a voice behind me call out, “Hey crybaby, think fast!”
Before I even had a chance to react…
SPLOOSH.
A full cup of liquid was suddenly dumped onto my crotch!
I gasped and stared down at my now soaking wet crotch for several seconds in shock.
But finally, I snapped out of it and spun around in rage. “Hey! Who did that?” I shouted.
I looked left and right… but whoever had done it had vanished.
I took one step forward, about to go stalking through the room to look for the perpetrator, when I suddenly noticed what it looked like had happened in my pants.
And as if they were reading my mind, I suddenly heard a nearby kid’s voice shout out… “Hey, look, everyone! The new kid wet his pants!”
Suddenly, all eyes turned and stared at me. The whole room went quiet. And once again… everyone erupted with hysterical laughter at my expense.
“What? No, I didn’t!” I blurted, suddenly trying to cover the massive wet stain on my crotch with my hands.
Even though I knew the accusation was absurd, I felt my face burning red hot. I was suddenly reliving the same exact humiliation of my spanking that morning. I couldn’t believe it.
Taunts of, “Look who peed his pants!” and “The crybaby wet himself!” rang out across the room.
“Shut up! I didn’t wet myself!” I continued shouting. “Somebody spilled something on me! Juice or something!”
But the laughter only got louder.
Furious and exasperated, I frantically looked around for Georgie. I knew it had to be him who did it. He clearly wanted revenge against me for taking the computer from him. And only a seven-year-old could concoct such an immature revenge plan.
But Georgie was nowhere to be seen. I realized he must have took off running to go hide somewhere right after he dumped the liquid on me.
“Lucas wet his paaaants! Lucas wet his paaaants!” One group of kids started singing.
“Shut up! All of you, just shut up! I didn’t wet my pants!” I pathetically squealed, no doubt only adding fuel to the fire.
Outnumbered, overwhelmed, and totally mortified, I backed up and frantically tried to retreat back to the safety of the computer. I sat down and closed my eyes, hoping everyone would soon just shut up.
But that’s when I heard one of the voices calling out across the room… “Teacher! Teacher! Come quick! The new kid peed his pants!”
I glanced over my shoulder to see one of the kids guiding Mrs. Hicks directly toward me from across the room.
And I got a very bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.
* * *
“Excuse me, young man. Is there something you would like to share with me?”
It was Mrs. Hicks. She was standing over my shoulder as I sat hunched over at the computer, pathetically trying to hide the giant wet stain in my pants.
“Umm, no, I don’t think so,” I whimpered, too nervous to even look up at her. I not only felt her eyes staring down at me, but the eyes of every other student in the room as well.
“Are you sure?” She repeated. “Are you sure there haven’t been any… accidents… I should be made aware of?”
“I didn’t wet myself!” I blurted out in embarrassment and anger.
Of course, part of me recognized that I really should have been acting as calm and adult-like as possible in the situation if I wanted her to believe me. But the taunting… the humiliation… the helplessness… it was all too much for me to handle. My emotions were boiling over.
“Alright, turn around and stand up for me, please,” she ordered.
“No! I don’t need to! I didn’t wet myself!” I blurted, my face burning redder by the second.
“Young man!” Mrs. Hicks shouted. “You have till the count of three to be on your feet for me, otherwise I promise you’ll be regretting your actions for a long, long time. One!”
I was frozen. Even though I knew I should just comply at this point, I still just couldn’t bear to face the room again in my humiliating condition. For some reason, at this point, the fact that I didn’t actually wet myself was hardly any comfort at all…
“Two. Two and a half…”
I still couldn’t move. And what was even worse… I felt myself tearing up.
“Two and three-quarters… Three. Alright, that’s it.”
Suddenly, my chair was pulled back and I was yanked to my feet. Mrs. Hicks expertly held and twisted my arm, securing me in place for her inspection before the small crowd.
“Oh dear…” she muttered as she stared down at the dark stain on my pants.
“See!” One of the other kids shouted. “I told you he wet his pants!”
I squeezed my eyes shut in unbearable humiliation.
“And you all saw him wet himself?” Mrs. Hicks asked the room.
Everyone in the room eagerly nodded their heads, much to my horror. It wasn’t even true! They were all a bunch of little liars!
“And he just went right back to playing computer afterward to try and hide it?” She asked. “He didn’t even try to get help for his accident?”
“That’s right!” The kids all nodded again.
“It’s not true!” I finally blurted. “They’re lying! I didn’t have an accident! Somebody just… spilled their drink on me or something!”
Mrs. Hicks hesitated. Her eyes narrowed. Then, to my horror, she leaned forward and sniffed the wet patch of my jeans…
“Oh, yuck!” she recoiled in disgust. “Pee-ew! That is no spilled drink. You stink like yucky peepee, young man!” She scolded, waving her hand before her face, causing all the kids to erupt with laughter again.
“No! No, you have to believe me!” I stammered. “It wasn’t me! It was Georgie! Georgie was mad because I took the computer from him!”
But Mrs. Hicks couldn’t have cared less about my pleas. “Save it! You’re in enough trouble as it is, right now,” she barked, dragging me toward the door. “I’m taking you right back to Miss Turner for her to figure out what to do with you.”
“What?!” I gasped. “No! Please! You have to believe me!”
But it was no use. We were already out the door. And as she pulled me down the hall, I heard the kids in the room behind me breaking out into song…
“Little Lucas peepee pants! Little Lucas peepee pants!”
I realized it was the second time that day I just wanted to die of humiliation. And it wasn’t even lunchtime yet.
* * *
Mrs. Hicks tightly gripped my wrist as we waited outside Miss Turner’s office.
“Please, you have to believe me!” I continued desperately whimpering. “It was all Georgie! He splashed the… whatever it is… and ran away just before you got there! I bet if you find him he’ll still have the cup he used in his hands!”
“Uh-huh,” Mrs. Hicks nodded, nearly rolling her eyes.
“I promise, it’s the truth! I swear! I’ll do anything, but you have to believe me!” I pleaded through tears.
“Shhhhhhh,” she said, trying to get me to quiet down. “Very well, Lucas, I’ll let Miss Turner know to take that under consideration.”
“Okay, thank you,” I pathetically whimpered, recognizing it was the best I was going to get.
Miss Turner’s door unlocked. We both looked up.
And to my shock… Georgie himself came waltzing out of Miss Turner’s office.
“See! There he is! Tell her, Georgie!” I shouted at him, pointing to my wet pants. “Tell Mrs. Hicks that you spilled this on me a few minutes ago!”
Georgie stared back at me like I was a lunatic escaped from the asylum.
“Georgie, how long were you just in Miss Turner’s office?” Mrs. Hicks asked him.
Georgie scratched his head. “I guess about thirty minutes or so?”
Mrs. Hicks nodded. “That’s what I thought as well. Thank you, Georgie, you can continue back to the room.”
My jaw was on the floor. I couldn’t believe it.
Mrs. Hicks turned to me. “Well then, little Lucas, I’m glad we were able to settle that so quickly. Now we both know for a fact that you’re not only a pants-wetter and a rule-breaker, but you’re also a pathological fibber as well. The nerve to blame something so infantile on an innocent classmate of yours… you should be ashamed.”
I was speechless. I didn’t understand how this was possible. I was so certain it was Georgie. It had to be Georgie.
“Now come along, Miss Turner is waiting,” Mrs. Hicks said, pulling me into the principal’s office behind her.
Just before Mrs. Hicks closed the door, I made eye contact with Georgie one more time. He stuck his tongue out, and before disappearing around the corner, he flashed a sinister grin and whispered the words…
Who’s the crybaby now, huh?
