Lots of all around work this week! The main main focus though has been Zoom, Crouch, and Video Compression. Starting off with one of my (the Dev) favorite to work on: Simulated video compression. To figure this out we first had to map out what really happens when you record a video with an older video recording device such as a camcorder. The camcorder first sees the scene through its lens. None of which are perfectly shaped or perfectly clean, so the base image the camcorder sees will be slightly blurry and distorted version of the real scene. To simulate this we take the image the camera sees through a post process material and apply a very slight gaussian blur through a noise texture as well as a very slight distortion. Next the camcorder will take the image it gets through the lens and try it's best to brighten up any areas of the image that are too dark. This works, but produces noise as a side effect the more it needs to brighten the image up. For this, a simple noise filter is added and faded based on the image brightness and overall scene brightness. Next, to simulate the color compression that is a result of the smaller bit depth of older camcorders, a color compression system is passed over the camera image. And to finish, the image is sharpened using post process to simulate automatic sharpening and all effects are stacked in the same order.
