Maria was careful to allow only one drop of her solution to fall from her pipette into the bottom of the champagne glass.
A knock came at the door. Maria had been so tense that she almost emptied the rest of the test tube's contents into the drink by accident, but she kept still. She quickly disposed of the test tube. Her "guest" had arrived.
Maria had always been a straight A student and was working hard to graduate with her PhD in biochemistry. She had always been a prodigy, so when an opportunity arose to earn a grant that would effectively cover her post doctorate research, she knew she stood a better chance than most. There was just one problem: Grace.
Grace had always been her academic rival and their combative race to be the top of the class had dominated their higher education experiences. Grace had also intended to earn this grant by presenting her research in slowing down the aging process - work that had already earned her much prestige on campus.
So, Maria had made it her mission to outdo Grace's presentation and had worked in secret to develop a formula that would reverse the aging process - a formula that she had secretly slipped into Grace's drink. It was an extra dosage - one that would physically and mentally regress her to a six year old rather than a twenty-one year old as intended.
Maria shot Grace an insincere smile as she opened the door. "Grace, thanks so much for coming!" she feigned. "I know how busy you've been preparing your research. It means a lot that you stopped by."
Grace snickered as she made her way through the door and set her backpack down on the couch. "Well, it was so unlike you to invite me over that I just had to see what you had planned."
"Nothing much," Maria lied, handing Grace her special champagne. "Just wanted to celebrate with a little toast to all our hard work this year!"
Grace paused hesitantly, staring at the glass. She eventually shrugged and accepted the offer. "Sure," she responded. "I could use a drink."
Maria grinned and raised her glass. "May the best researcher win." The two toasted and then drank their champagne.
Grace reacted strongly to the drink, immediately appearing woozy as the effects of the formula took their course. She set her glass down. "Whoa," she said dazed. "What was in that drink?"
"Grace, Grace, Grace..." Maria responded. "You're such a smart girl, but you are far too trusting. I can't let you win this grant so I'm taking you out of the competition."
Grace stammered, "You... you roofied me?"
"No, far worse, actually," Maria said with an evil smirk. "My solution will regress your mind until you're as dumb as a kindergartener. You can forget all about phospholipids and enzyme kinetics. In just a few minutes, you'll be back to reading Dr. Seuss and single-digit addition problems."
Grace stumbled in her fog. "You... you bitch! You're such a... such a... meanie!"
"Oh, you'll thank me," Maria bragged. "No more chemistry formulas. The only research you'll have to do is watching reruns of the Magic School Bus. It's a much bigger burden to be as smart as I am."
"No faiw!" Grace said - her tantrum escalating. "You cheated! Big cheater!"
Grace started grabbing Maria's throw pillows and tossing them on the ground, yelling in frustration. Maria easily restrained her, somehow both annoyed and amused at the already childish reaction. "Simmer down, little missy," Maria teased. "You always were a brat, but I never realized how much until now. Now, wait in the corner while I grab something to replace your big girl clothes."
"But..." Grace resisted, stomping her foot.
"No buts," Maria responded. "Unless I'm spanking yours for talking back. Corner, now!"
Maria couldn't help but laugh at loud as her academic rival sulked to the corner on her command. The formula had acted so quickly that Grace was completely unable to stand up to Maria's authority. It was pathetic and better than she had hoped.
Maria ran upstairs to grab Grace's preplanned outfit to complete the humiliating display. Pink PJ's with tiny blue teddy bears across and princess Pull-Ups in case the chem genius was a juvenile bedwetter. She came back downstairs to find Grace sucking her thumb and staring at her whiteboard where she had drafted her winning formula.
"I said corner!" Maria repeated.
"I'm sowwy," Grace responded, thumb still planted firmly in her mouth.
"Couch," Maria commanded. Her new charge followed her instructions and laid herself out so Maria could start removing her prestigious lab coat, black pencil skirt, and her now unnecessary floss-thin thong. Maria had wanted to ruin Grace's academic career, but she had to admit she felt a twinge guilty throwing out the thong: Grace was never going get fucked ever again in her current state. Sad.
Maria felt far less guilty seeing the naked evidence of her fast-acting solution. Grace was even more flat chested than before and her body was completely hairless. Completely.
"Aww, what an adorable, smooth puss-puss you have now, Grace!" Maria teased. "I'd bet it'd look even cuter in this Pull-Up!"
Grace sulked with her arms crossed as the Pull-Up slid up her legs and covered her privates, followed by the babyish pajama ensemble.
"Smile," Maria instructed, pulling out her smartphone. "I want a memento of the day I won the grant."
Grace continued to frown while the picture was snapped. Regardless, Maria responded, "Cute! Oh my gosh, you are so much better this way! I did you a favor. Now, keep sitting there while I finish off my research."
Maria fetched the test tube from the drawer where she had stashed it. She took a sip in preparation for tomorrow's presentation. When the board sees me tomorrow with the perky tits and wide hips of an undergraduate, they'll have to award me the grant money on the spot, Maria thought with a satisfied ahh as she downed the formula.
A grating voice interrupted Maria's internal celebration. "Why's da wate of decay equal to fwee point uhhhh... three point two two?"
Maria groaned. Her little kid mind was trying to understand what she saw on the whiteboard. Obviously, Maria had changed to rate of decay for Grace's batch. "Not that you would understand anymore, but I increased the rate of decay for you so that your genetic clock reversed further."
"But... but da wate should be lower than fwee point two. Higha wate means dat reversal stops quicka."
A pause. Maria's eyes went wide as she dropped the test tube on the ground, shattering it. Maria rushed back to her whiteboard, reexamining her formula. No, no, no! Grace couldn't be right. Had Maria really missed something so elementary that someone with the brains of an actual elementary schooler had caught it before her?!
Maria redid the math while her brain was still at its full potential. 3.22 was too high a rate of decay. It should've been halved! But that meant... her aging would reverse even more rapidly!
The fog started to rush in. Everything became hazy. She tried to focus on the math, but the numbers soon began to appear like gibberish so she shifted her focus elsewhere. How about how silly Grace had looked in her adorable princess Pull-Ups? Adorable? No, totally stupid, Maria had meant!
Maria was a certified genius, a doctor of medicine! Her work was going to change the world! But, her mind became overloaded with thoughts of Wheels on the Bus until she struggled to remember the words. Da wees on dadada... No, that wasn't right! Gagaga. No!
Maria in her almost-drunken state barely processed as lay on the floor looking up at Grace while she stripped off her clothes. "Don't worry, Mawia," Grace said to her. "I'm gonna change you."
Maria was so distracted putting her own hand in her mouth, drooling everywhere, that she missed Grace taping a crinkly diaper around her waist. She fell asleep after that.
She woke up to a new sunny day as Grace held her hand making their way through the university campus through shocked stares from fellow students as they witnessed the diaper-clad woman being paraded to the science center. "Come on!!" Grace yelled. "We're gonna miss awr pwesentashun!"
Clip clop clip clop was all Maria could think staring at her bare feet as she was dragged along, tongue sticking out between her lips as she giggled in naïve pleasure.
Next thing Maria could remember, she was staring out from the auditorium stage to a panel of some of the greatest scientific minds in the country, all with an expression of complete bewilderment at the sight before them.
Pweesentata! was all Maria could manage. Grace attempted to take the lead.
"Hi, we are goin' ta pwesent our wesearch," she lisped.
Pweesent!
"Umm... I made it so dat people don't get old so quickly!" Grace shared. "But den my friend made it so dat we got young vewy quickly! And now... um... now we are gonna share da wesearch."
Grace was interrupted from faint sound coming from the inside of Maria's diaper. Pssssss... Her diaper yellowed and inflated until Grace's shoddy taping took its toll and Maria's accident began to leak onto the university's stage. The panel gasped in shock as Maria burst into tears, wailing so loud that it echoed through the halls of the building.
"Mawia!" Grace shouted, frustrated. "You're suppos'ta go peepee in the potty! You ruined da whole pwesentashun! You ruined ev'wything!"
As Maria bawled and Grace shrieked, the onlookers stared in amazement. Neither of them would win the grant. God no, not even close. The pair would never be able to attempt academic research again.
But, the squelch of Maria's soaked diaper rubbing against the stage or the methodic sucking sound of Grace's thumb in her mouth in between sobs was ironically the greatest measure of excellent research that this panel had ever seen and would ever see.
Two of the top biochemists to ever walk this campus had been reduced to their basest form: two petty crybabies who whined and sobbed when things didn't go their way. The ladies who had bragged about their brains now couldn't even comprehend m = Q x r; they'd be lucky to relearn their ABCs and 123s.
At least the only thing the two women had to fight about now was who got to play with the Fisher-Price learning robot and who could keep their pants dry the longest.
