I was not around in the 70s but I remember getting my first Slurpee with my dad when I was 4 or 5 in the mid eighties on Long Island. The machines were behind the counter and the cashier did have to pour them... There were only two flavors at a time to choose from. Usually our location had cherry and lime at that time.

I remember an Icee machine at the Kmart in my childhood in the 70s in Nashville. I also remember when they went into 7-11 stores and became Slurpees. And at 7-11, I always remember them being self-serve!
