Four years ago was the night which changed my life.
I nursed my drink, keeping myself to the periphery of the crowd. Then the purple fog rolled in, and I never got that chance.
The DJ was the first person to change. His eyes glazed over and lit up, then purple and blue spirals filled them out from the iris until the whites of his eyes were gone. Calling it a balloon felt like an insult to its enormity, blimp, Zeppelin and dirigible were similarly lacklustre. It breathed in, continued to grow beyond anyone’s ability to comprehend, then breathed out more of its purple fog.
But no matter how much of it I inhaled, I didn’t transform. I kept waiting for my turn to ascend skyward and join my friends. They were so happy I thought they might explode from sheer delight. The DJ was pulsing with the bass from his speakers, with an eager crowd of half-naked patrons - themselves transforming into fantastic creatures and their ideal selves - thrusting themselves against him like an erotic bouncy castle.
When the great purple balloon became the sky itself the creaking of its balloon skin became thunder. Blue fire raced across the rune. It was smokeless and heatless, but it was brighter than any flame I had witnessed in my life. I heard a door opening from somewhere deep in the blue flickers, and a huge purple claw reached up through my floor. Another joined it, springing up through solid wooden panels without touching them. “Why not me?”
Selph cocked their head to the side in confusion. “I... beg your pardon?”
I repeated “why not me?” I took a breath, remembering that New Year’s Eve, and the feeling of being left out of my deepest fantasy. And how much it stung. “Everyone got to transform, except for me. Selph’s expression lost its light. He sighed deeply and waved a hand, extinguishing the flame. He sat down in mid-air and gave me an expression of what I still believe today was genuine sympathy. “I’m sorry. There was no reason for you being left out, you simply were. My magic is powerful, but it is not perfect, no one’s is. The truth is you could have been resistant on some level because of a long distant relative being a mage,” Selph waved their claw.
“You could have been too terrified and not... enthusiastic,” he paused. “Okay I’ll be direct, not horny enough.” He cast his gaze on me and I felt small. “But right now I’m quite impressed with you. I won’t pretend to know how your technology works, but the individual responsible for setting up the site which housed my rune assured me it was almost impossible to find, and I have no reason to believe he lied to me.”

Selph tapped his chin. “Do you want a job?”

I did and saw a sprawling, palatial town. The buildings were hardly uniform, but they had a few features which marked their architectural roots as similar. The pointed roofs, abundance of water features and circular windows were just a few. “What is that?” I asked, spying crowds of people in loose robes and holiday ware on the bridges closest to the edge.
“My resort. The Violet Streams. It used to simply be ‘The Bathhouse,’ but I expanded.” Selph laughed.
“... and you want me to work there?”
“Look up.”
I did. Parade balloons. As intricate and beautifully taut, and rounded with hot air as Selph had been the day he loomed over my city were blissful above the resort. Their facial expressions moved, and I gasped again. “They’re so beautiful, I want to be like that.”
Selph conjured an orb of purple light on the tip of their claw and fed it to me. “And you will be.”
