Chapter 120 - Jericho
"That was a long trip. My waist is numb." JJ had taken the super-soldier serum, so his old wounds had disappeared.
Ethan looked at the quiet town and murmured, "If it weren't for the recent murders, I'd think this place is perfect for retirement. I like its weather."
"I don't think this is a place where I'll retire..."
"Are you planning to die on the battlefield?"
"For God's sake, no. We're not in a fantasy world to think like that. Maybe I'll become a farmer."
Ethan realized then that everyone eventually focuses on what they want at some point in their life.
There's only one life. If you don't do what you want, you may never have another chance to face it.
"I'm going to buy a milkshake. Wait here." Ethan walked toward a restaurant where he found many people. Everyone was eating in silence, trying to draw as little attention as possible from him, who appeared to be the out-of-town detective sent to the village.
Ethan's gaze wandered over these people, passing by each one until he reached the boy serving the customers.
"You must be new around here," said an old man who looked at Ethan with great interest.
"That's right. Do you come here often?" Ethan smiled slightly as he paid attention to the old man, who could be a valuable source of information.
"Only occasionally. Hey, I've got a question. Are you here because of the murders?"
"I can't answer that." Ethan wasn't willing to. He didn't want rumors to spread throughout the town when he needed things to stay calm.
"I understand. I used to be a detective too. If they've sent so many of you to this place, I hope the country is giving you the attention you need." The old man walked toward the display case and ordered a slice of tres leches cake.
Ethan stopped talking to the old man. For some reason, he knew he'd reveal too much if he didn't distance himself from him.
Well, that makes it clear that there are amazing people everywhere.
"Welcome, customer. What would you like to order today?"
Ethan's attention shifted to the barista named Tyler. He smiled slightly and said, "An iced coffee, please. Lots of sugar."
"Got it. It won't take long," Tyler responded as he got to work.
Of course, there was a reason Ethan was here, aside from ordering an iced coffee out of simple patience.
The Weathervane was founded in 1975, as shown on the red aprons worn by the baristas and waiters.
The café is quite popular among locals and Nevermore students, as there are only a few other places where locals hang out in town.
If there's a supernatural killer in this place, they've most likely been here.
"Is this place quiet?" Ethan asked.
"From Monday to Friday, it's calm, but on weekends, we get a lot more activity. So, I'd recommend thinking about it if student noise bothers you." Tyler smiled nervously. He didn’t know why, but Ethan's presence was making him very uneasy.
Ethan nodded slightly, reached into his pocket, and left a hundred-dollar bill. After taking his coffee, he said, "Keep the change."
"Huh? Thank you for your purchase!" Tyler didn't have time to properly respond to Ethan, as he was already gone by then.
