Chapter 61: Making a Decision
“You, you, you... You’re being dishonest in these bets! You damn cheater!” One of the men stood up abruptly, causing his chair to fall to the floor. His bets had been too large, and now he had lost more than a thousand gold coins in just two miserable games. He pointed at Jun with his finger, clearly furious.
It wasn’t just him; even Gild was starting to feel more doubtful about these results. How could they always be just one point higher than the score they had? Jun wasn’t a wizard, so the chances of him pulling off some trick were minimal after all, he was no more than fifteen years old. But no matter how Gild looked at it, why were this boy and the giant of a man in front of him winning as if blessed by the goddess of fortune? One or two coincidences might be valid if they weren’t trying to win, but there had been two truly important games where they did exactly what they always did to secure victory.
The moment that man pointed his finger at Jun, Trevor prepared to cut off his arm. But suddenly, Jun raised his hand, completely serious, causing Trevor to stop in his tracks.
Perhaps no one noticed, but Chung felt a chill run down his spine. He knew that if it weren’t for Jun, the foolish young man who was accusing him of cheating would have been cut into pieces. Maybe there was something else happening behind the table; who knows?
“Watch your words better, dear dog. Are you saying my friend Trevor cheated? You’re not only offending him but also his honorable integrity, and that’s something you should think twice about,” Jun shook his head. It was unfortunate that so many sought death so unnecessarily just as he was starting to have fun.
Gild stood up and directly slapped his friend, then slightly bowed in apology and said, “I must apologize for my friend’s behavior. I take responsibility for him and ask both of you to let this disrespectful insult slide. Perhaps it’s the alcohol that’s making him act in such an uncomfortable way.”
Trevor looked at the idiot who had just accused him of cheating and said, “It’s normal for dogs to bark when they lose their composure, but you’d better watch your words, or you’ll receive a beating from my fists.”
Jun’s eyes lit up with excitement. What beautiful words to describe a rude dog! That’s exactly how he would have acted as a child. To be honest, he was increasingly interested in how the mafia that controlled this place worked and why the general named Rugal and his five hundred men didn’t dare to solve the problems.
“If you don’t have money, then get out of my sight! I was careless to believe you would at least consider money as just a means of fun here.” Jun didn’t even bothisto give him a second glance. Instead, he smiled disdainfully and said, “If these dogs want to play fair and dishonest, they need to show proof that we’re cheating—something solid—not the words of a drunk who can’t control the filthy things coming out of his mouth. Did anyone see us cheating? Trevor, do you think we were cheating?”
Gild fixed a stern gaze on Jun, hiding his desire to devour him whole. But once Jun involved Trevor in this, the fact that they were just spouting accusations without evidence made them extremely nervous.
Trevor glared at the table with wide eyes and a furious expression. He didn’t know the rules of this game, much less about numbers, nor was He particularly observant when things didn’t catch his interest. However, they had won without losing a single round.
“What a bunch of whining dogs. When they were ahead in the numbers, they were mocking us. They even laughed openly in front of us. But now that they’re losing, all they do is accuse us of cheating.”
“Honorable warrior, it’s not like that.”
“You really have the nerve to accuse us of cheating! I was right next to Gild the whole time! All we did was roll the dice just like you did. How could we possibly cheat? How dare you say we cheated? You were the ones who invited us to play here. I bet we wouldn’t even be in this place right now if it weren’t for one of your workers.”
“Who? Who invited you to come gamble?” Gild asked, collapsing into his chair, drained.
“It was him!” Trevor pointed at Chung, who was jumping with joy over all the coins he had won. But when he saw everyone looking at him, his body suddenly froze.
“He was the one who first invited Jun to come here! It would be very strange if he didn’t know this place. With so few betting houses daring to bet such large amounts, there must be some kind of scheme behind how this place operates. That can only mean he’s in charge of bringing in players with money so you can leave them with nothing! I can’t imagine how many you’ve left in ruins. Are you really taking me for a fool?”
Everyone was surprised, even Jun. This was unexpected, but it was just what he needed. “Wow, I hadn’t thought of it that way.”
…
In a room on the second floor of a restaurant not far from the betting house.
“Reporting: A young man, apparently very wealthy, has already entered the betting house. However, one of them seems to have something to do with the lord of this city.” A man who appeared to be a bodyguard reported to the man who was eating.
“The lord of the city is here? When did this happen, and why am I only hearing about it now?” The man speaking was around thirty years old, a great warrior who had defeated Rugan a few months ago in a fair battle.
“Perhaps he has sent his son ahead before presenting himself in this city,” the bodyguard said, watching everything from the shadows. His job was to report everything to Yun.
“Even if that’s the case, the boy those idiots are gambling with must have great influence with the palace. Our damned luck is the worst!” Yun took a sip of wine and said, “If that’s the case, inform Gild and the others not to mess with those people. They might not realize who they’re really dealing with. Tell them to come up with some excuse to get out of there, even if they have to lose money in the process. Also, they should invite that young man to another gambling meeting. Go now!”
“Yes!” The guard hurried out of the restaurant, but unfortunately, it was already too late.
