Chapter 43: Without Wasting Time
Jun and Kyou Kai hid behind the bushes, looking toward the camp where the general of this army was supposed to be.
If they followed tradition, when a general died, the army would retreat, abandoning whatever they were trying to achieve. Of course, this only worked if they were on an open battlefield.
If it were an invasion, Jun knew things might be different.
Just as Jun did not expect to encounter the guards so soon, the general, naturally, did not expect an attack being planned to kill him.
After all, in the original plan, Jun had succeeded in every one of his commands, demonstrating his great leadership skills, something everyone needed in a battle like the one they were engaged in.
Jun had been trained to be an assassin; he hoped not to disappoint his trainers, who were probably the strongest in the Asura village.
"I'll take care of the two in front; kill the one directly ahead of us."
Kyou Kai nodded, gripping the hilt of her sword, ready to kill that soldier quickly.
In front of Jun stood three guards who were taking turns to check if there were any nearby enemies. They stayed close to one another, fearing an encounter with adversaries.
"I didn’t expect we’d crush the Qin army so quickly. I expected more from those arrogant bastards," said a soldier who couldn’t help but mock the situation.
"Everything was too easy; this war is really going better than I expected."
"Yeah, we’ll win soon."
Jun, hiding in a bush and holding his breath, opened his eyes.
Darkness had surrounded him, and his presence had completely disappeared, avoiding detection by the guards who had passed right by him.
At that moment, Jun moved like lightning, swinging his sword forcefully from the right, and precisely severed the heads of both guards.
Clang! Clang!
Their heads flew into a bush, and before their bodies hit the ground, Kyou Kai, who was in front, rushed out, and before the remaining guard could alert the nearby troops—
Crack!
Kyou Kai's attack was cleaner; the tip of her sword pierced the warrior's throat, leaving him unable to make a sound.
“Well done; you’re better than I thought.” Jun approached the guard to search him, hoping to find something that could help on their path to assassinate the general.
But unfortunately, there was nothing but a bow, arrows, and poorly maintained swords.
“You were right, the infantry is not an army prepared for war.” Kyou Kai had heard that nations forced all adults to participate in their wars, all to defend their homes.
Nations that were destroyed and annexed into other dynasties turned all their inhabitants into slaves; no one in these times would want that for their family.
War was inevitable, so without opinion or a vote, they had to fight.
It had been over five hundred years since then, after all.
Jun had only been in this world for a few years; Kyou Kai had only recently started to learn about the outside world, and unlike them, the people of this country had spent hundreds of years in the same situation.
“Yes, but I suppose there's no choice...” Everyone would only stop fighting when there was the unification of all China.
Jun didn’t remember when that would happen, but he knew it would.
“Shall we wait until it gets dark?”
“We can’t. Now that the cavalry has mobilized, it’s easy to guess they will attack with all their strength in a desperate attempt to take the head of the commander at this point.” Jun had changed his plans once more.
He didn't like doing this, but he had no alternatives.
“Let’s go; we must keep moving.”
But at that moment, fierce shouts, which seemed to come from the Qin infantry, were heard approaching.
“Allies?”
“Those idiots are marching to their deaths.” Jun had given them the opportunity to control the battlefield, but they had wasted it. Instead of crushing the Wei infantry, they were doing the same thing that Jun was patiently doing.
Kyou Kai understood this and said, “We have to move.”
Jun kept looking at the area ahead and sighed; this would be a bloodbath he would rather not participate in if he had any other choice.
