44 - Luke's Perks
The road was difficult and very desolate. As they progressed, Luke took the lead, avoiding walking near trees and dangerous terrain. After all, getting stuck could lead to a terrifying death for him and Baxter.
And they still hadn't found anything on the way except for the Lemmings.
Under the polar night, everything is lonely.
At this time of year, the sun barely rises above the horizon and the nights are endless, enveloping the Arctic landscape in deep, cold darkness. But for Airon, this is not an obstacle, but an opportunity.
Luke stood on a snow slope and looked around.
Except for the faint aurora that flickers on the ice sheet in the distance, there are no signs of life elsewhere.
In the ice area, there are often polar bears, the true lords of the Arctic continent, and very few who can confront them. Therefore, in these areas, the frequency of Arctic wolves is not common.
However, on the ice sheet, due to the presence of marine life, food is still abundant and rarely scarce.
Luke, as a human in the body of a wolf, knew this perfectly well. Therefore, under his guidance, he and Baxter advanced through the vast Arctic continent.
There was nothing stopping them anymore, after all, Baxter could keep up with Luke's pace and he no longer worried about covering great distances.
"The sun isn't as intense in this part of the continent..." Luke, who was on a snowy slope, suddenly saw flickering lights in the distance.
Upon this, he stopped abruptly to evaluate his surroundings.
Baxter at his side also crawled immediately with his mouth tucked under the snow, ready to attack. After following Luke many times, Baxter has done a good job of being alert and hiding his body although not entirely successfully.
Baxter didn't know most things, but he understood that he must attack and defend, that's the primary thing in these situations.
All that could be seen behind the bright light was the gigantic monster four to five meters long.
Size determines strength, looking at this giant four or five meters long, Baxter's small fighting spirit cooled in frustration.
But standing on the snow slope, Luke did not panic.
He knows better than anyone what it is, something he never thought he would see in this part of the Arctic, a damn car.
Luke knew from documentaries, so he lifted his chest and made a pose as if he were the Lion King.
It could be seen that there were cameras outside the vehicle.
Whether making documentaries or studying biological habits, everyone is always dedicated to research.
The speed of the off-road vehicle was not slow, everything seemed to indicate that they did not want to be in this place at night or had finished their work.
On the other hand, the people in the off-road vehicle could not see Luke and his beautiful movie pose. After all, he and Baxter were standing on the snow slope, condescendingly, and with the cover of the black night like the mouth of a wolf, it was difficult to find them.
As soon as the vehicle disappeared, Luke looked the other way. Knowing what he wanted to do, he slowly walked and guided Baxter on the way.
It hadn't been long since he arrived on the ice when Luke felt the sensation of stepping on this surface for the first time.
The layer of ice is not as dark as in other places. Instead, there are many auroras hanging from the sky. The aurora is very beautiful, with ever-changing shapes, something magical that Luke never thought he would see in person.
Some colors are diverse and always changing, others are extraordinarily bright, as if they have a divine glow comparable to that of stars and the moon.
"Who would have told me that I would be here after my apparent death inside the body of a wolf with an idiot subordinate?" Luke looked at Baxter, who was "hidden" in the snow with half of his body exposed.
"Stop hiding, any predator in the area would have already seen us..." Luke was a little embarrassed about his ideas of having the strongest wolf pack in the Arctic and then having Baxter as the second strongest.
"Grr!" Baxter indicated that he was alert.
"Anyway..." Luke fixed his eyes in the distance and could see some animals on the ice.
It was a herd of seals.
There are five or six seals resting together on the ice.
Seals are marine mammals that inhabit cold waters in the northern and southern hemispheres. They are characterized by having a slim and streamlined body, with fins that allow them to move in the water with great ease. Their large and expressive eyes help them detect predators and find prey.
Seals have thick and dense fur that protects them from the cold, and they often spend long periods of time in the water. Although it may not seem like it, they are an important part of the marine ecosystem and are hunted by some cultures for their meat, skin, and oil.
"Hunters..." Luke thought.
These seals seem to be here just to rest, as there are no cubs so they probably separated from the original group.
"[... Species: Gray seal.
Level: 8
Esper Energy: 1523
Resistance: 91
Strength: 63
Defense: 59
Speed: 51...]"
Luke was used to seeing the attributes of any creature that crossed his eyes, after all, he did not know exactly every animal that inhabited this place.
The strength of this lot of seals is not strong.
They usually feed on marine species, and their ability to fight on the ice is very weak. Although they are strong, it is not a problem for Luke to face them.
But he still didn't move.
Because the seals are too close to the sea that crosses the ice, and their chance of biting him is high. Not to mention that they can escape too quickly, it was not a good idea to waste energy on that.
This was also Baxter's first time on the ice cap, so he was obviously very excited and restless.
But since there was no sign of his boss, nor to provoke the group of seals, he slipped from left to right with his tongue flapping in the air. Then, he approached the water and licked it, but soon put on a bright expression.
Luke knows that seawater with too much salt content cannot be drunk directly. After a few sips, Baxter gave up on that idea. And in the unexpected moment, Baxter saw many fish swimming in the seawater below the ice cap inside.
"Awaw! Woof!"
Baxter stretched his claws to fish several times, but didn't catch anything. He was so angry that he couldn't help howling twice.
The howl of the wolves also made the seal not far away look in their direction. Luke could swear their expressions were lazy and arrogant.
Seals rarely see Arctic wolves approaching the ice, so in those little eyes, there was also much curiosity about the two predators who were trying to fish for fish.
"Mmm...!"
Luke didn't care about the stares of the seals, but he was impatient with Baxter's behavior. As soon as he arrived at his side, he looked at the opening in the ice layer and the fish swimming underneath.
Luke's sight and reaction are much faster than Baxter's.
Seeing a fish swimming beyond the mouth of the ice layer, he grabbed it with a claw.
Luke's sharp claws penetrated deeply into the cold water, causing vortexes in the calmness. However, the softness of the sea water also made him feel resistance.
"It got away!" Luke's first attempt was a complete failure. But the fish's back was cut, and the blood spread all over the water.
But something curious happened at this moment, as soon as the fish scales were cut and the smell of blood emitted, it also attracted many fish under the ice layer.
But these fish are very agile, even though there were many, Baxter stretched several claws in a row in an attempt to fish for something, but all his attempts failed.
In a hurry, he could only look.
Luke, seeing Baxter's teary eyes, couldn't help but get frustrated. Although he wasn't interested in fishing, he wanted to see and know what a sin tasted like.
This made Luke determined.
He indicated to Baxter to look to the side and positioned his body.
"Rrrr!" Baxter then bunched up, ready to cover Luke's back even if a polar bear was nearby.
And at the same time, Luke's eyes glowed a red intent, staring fixedly at the fish swimming under the mouth of the ice.
His right paw was ready to attack at any moment.
An Arctic trout about 50 centimeters long swam agilely, their whiskers moving in the water, following the particular smell of blood.
This arctic trout had plenty of meat and could easily fill a growing arctic wolf.
When the arctic trout swam closest to Luke, he seized the moment and fiercely waived his right paw.
Within the water, his fierce attack went deep and headed towards its target.
The wolf's sharp claws mercilessly pierced the scales and penetrated the body of the arctic trout.
But arctic trout are very fierce, even though it was almost pierced by a wolf's claws, it still fiercely resisted.
In that fierce resistance, Luke's claws sank deeper into the body of his target.
Having secured his prey, Luke put his other paw into the cold water and ensured the grip. Despite the arctic trout's desire to resist, in the end, it resulted in nothing more than its slow agony.
After a few seconds, Luke had pulled out the arctic trout while Baxter was at his side, biting his boss's tail to drag him and the prey.
The seals in the distance who were enjoying the scene, took off.
The intelligence quotient of seals is much higher than that of wolves, and their understanding of nature is naturally deeper.
At first, arctic wolves coming to hunt on the ice are rare.
But what they didn't expect was that this majestic arctic wolf was fishing at the mouth of the ice.
And he really caught the fish.
This made a group of seals' eyes filled with splendor.
"Splendid!"
