“Bu-bu-bu-Bup!”
The little electric chirping plays out over the grumbling bustle of the cafe. Your hand goes to your hip, and you unhook the pager-sized plastic shape.
“Hey, what’s up? Everything okay?”
You see her shape bounce on the screen.
“I want gummy.”
Her voice is sharp beep-y from the low quality speakers. She’s a bit of a brat, but you find her antics endearing. You wouldn’t be dating her if you didn’t.
The two of you started going out officially only two months ago. You were kinda hesitant at first, mostly just because she doesn’t have a you-scale chassis. Android style bodies aren’t exactly inconspicuous. Still, you realized eventually that her current physical body wasn’t any reason to not give it a shot, at least. And it’s been pretty wonderful so far.
“You can’t eat, sweetie.”
“I want. GUMMY!”
You groan in mock exasperation.
“You’re gonna get me kicked out of this cafe if you keep shouting, you little troublemaker.”
Her screen just shows a little “:3”.
“Gimme the gummy and no one has to get kicked.”
“I told you you can’t eat. You don’t have a mouth. You’re in a real mood today, aren’t you?”
“I’ve gone feral. Gonna bite ya.”
“Again, no mouth. Think I’m safe.”
On the screen, she looks like a mini robot eye, with six little arm… leg.. things floating around her. The eye opens up, into low res fangies.
“Grrraaahhh!!”
“Okay, that’s it.”
You plug your headphones in so her nonsense doesn’t go over the tinny speakers anymore.
In your ear, you hear a much smoother, melodic version of her voice.
“Excuse me, I was making a scene.”
“I know you were, you gremlin. We still gotta keep a low profile, remember?”
“I got no idea what you’re talking about. I’m just your bubbly lil synth pet~”
That’s a damn lie, obviously. She’s possibly the most dangerous entity on the planet. You used to work for a maintenance company that serviced a government contracted R&D firm. You found her core jammed in the incinerator chute. A code-breaking mesh, dumped when it’s sapience risk went too high. Well turns out she was already sapient, and hacked the auto shunts to break her fall. You could have turned her in and gotten a bonus. Instead you dismantled your virtual pet and hide her core in it’s case. You thought you were gonna get caught. But here you are ten months later, in a different country with a true AI hiding in your tamagotchi case.
“Yeah, harmless. You definitely couldn’t crash global network communications in an afternoon if you felt like it.”
“:3”
You roll your eyes and smile.
“Let’s get out of here, huh?”
“Ooh, gonna take me home and ravish me~?”
You snort, but there’s a tinge of blush on your cheeks. She likes to tease you. You stand, and start to head to the train.
“Yeah, gonna go home and fuck my tamagotchi.”
“Listen, I have some ideas. For examp-”
“Don’t you dare finish that thought.”
She interrupts when you try to clip her to your hip.
“Hold on a sec. I’m cold.”
You bring her back up to your face.
“That so?”
“Mm. Yup.”
“What do you want me to do about it.”
“Put me in your bra.”
“You little fuckin pervert.”
Her mischievous snickering is so cute.
“Look, I asked for gummy, you didn’t give me any. The least you could do to make it up is give me tiddy.”
“Why? You can’t even feel them. Or see them, if I cram you in my bra.”
“Do I really need to give you a reason to wanna be squished by tiddy?”
With a playful groan, you tuck the little plastic shell into the left cup of your bra, setting it just under the curve so the weight of it rests on her screen, a turn of events heralded by loud rowdy beeping from her speaker.
“How are you doing that while I have the headphones plugged in?”
“OMG what a miracle. How could I possibly circumvent the secure design of a fifty cent speaker!”
“Have you ever once considered holding your tongue?”
“But if I’m holding my tongue how can I lick-”
“Oh shut UP you little brat.”
Muffled giggling from your bra.
You’ve made it to the station, and the train is pulling up.
“Just behave until we get home, okay?”
“And then what do you want me to do~?”
“Continue to behave!”
And the train is moving, and the city rolls by, slowly at first. The sun is setting, and the clouds are sparse, and the sky is heavy and bright and beautiful. You aren’t really on the run, per say. That company you used to work for folded recently. There’s buzzing of unethical research practices, and harassment to boot. Of course there was.
No one even knows to look for you. As far as anyone knows, you did your job, and then moved. And now you get to spend your time with this wonderful little monster of an AI. She hums a little synthy tune in your ear through the headphones.
~~~
Back at your apartment, you flip on the lights and put your coat on the rack. It’s modest, but cozy. A place to be lived in.
You pull her out of your bra, setting the warm plastic on the table, and unplugging the headphones.
“Can I stop behaving now.”
“Mhm. Got a surprise for you.”
“What.”
“A present.”
The little plastic shape starts vibrating wildly, moving across the table a little towards you.
“Don’t wiggle yourself off the table, you’ll crack your screen again. One sec, let me grab it.”
“Present present present present present present present.”
You here her still vibrating and repeating herself while you rifle through the closet you hid the gift in.
“Here we go.”
You pick her up so she can get a better look at it.
“The legs are attached, and not as flexible as your avatar’s, but I figured it would be nice to be able to stretch your legs.”
She’s squealing in excitement. It’s a spherical bot five legs, a sort of novelty pet or assistant. But the top half has been modified to fit her case.
“Think of it a little mech suit so you can knock stuff off my shelves more efficiently.”
“Why are you so nice to meeeeee!!”
“Cuz you’re cute and deserve nice things.”
You see tears streaming silently down her display.
“Can I try it?”
You plug her case into the bot, listening for the little click that means it’s secure. You tested it with an actual tamagotchi. But were still nervous it wouldn’t fit.
It takes her a minute to take control. Her connection isn’t hardwired, but her antenna lets her access anything within three feet of her, and she quickly hijacks the little bot. It twitches, bends it’s little legs.
“This is. Omg. This is so cool!!”
And she’s off like a shot, scrambling wildly across the table, down one of the table legs, and across the floor. It’s so fast, for whatever reason you weren’t expecting her to zip around the room like an overexcited guinea pig, and you can’t help but laugh wildly as she goes.
As she explores the room, you watch and give her tips.
“The main camera on that is a huge improvement I’m sure. And it has a build in antenna that should increase your hack radius by at least fifteen feet. You’ll be able to get around a lot easier, though going out on your own still might be a bit dangerous. I’ve got a little bag for you to ride around in too.”
“And you’ll still carry me around in your bra if I ask nice?”
You roll your eyes dramatically.
“Of course, you little nerd, because I’m a huge pushover.”
She climbs up your leg, deftly making her way to your shoulder.
“Did you know that you’re the best person in the whole world completely and forever?”
She nuzzles against your face happily, so you stroke her new body’s casing with love.
“Nah. But I’m glad I make you happy.”
~~~
So it’s a week later, and you’re at that same cafe again. You’re wearing wireless headphones, so she can communicate without drawing attention to you. She’s sort of napping, more or less, on your shoulder while you work. You do some remote network contracting stuff these days. Something about being cooped up in a corporate building all day unnerves you now. You aren’t exactly a software expert, but you’ve learned a lot from your little gremlin of a partner. Plus, ah, she pretty much did it for you the first couple months. She offered, got you out of a tight spot.
She’s so peaceful right now. It’s really nice to see her like this, especially since she’s usually so rowdy. You’re sure she’ll be back to normal soon, causing trouble and teasing you and making jokes. And that will be cute and fun.
But you cherish these small moments, where it feels like everything in the world could melt away, leaving just you there, as she rests on you.

That's valid, I'm not sure devolving into filth would improve it, I just thought that's where it was going you know?
