People behaving like soap characters are real is a fairly common thing. There was a scary incident back in the early 00s where the BBC showed what they thought was a random made up mobile number in an episode of Eastenders. Unfortunately, by pure random bad luck, the number actually belonged to real bloke IRL. Even worse the number in the soap belonged to a nasty character, so hundreds of viewers, incensed by whatever said character had done, decided to give him a piece of their minds by ringing/texting the number. The real owner of the number's voice mail and text message inboxes got stuffed full of abuse, including a death threat. He had to change his number it got so bad. He ended up going to the news about it, BBC apologised, edited it out in the Sunday omnibus and from them on only use non existent 5 digit network codes at the start of their fake numbers.
