We found the bug! Thank you. It is possible to continue if you go to bed.
Still getting an error on the night of the meeting.. If I go to the chief's hut and up the ladder, I end up on the shore in a tent and if I talk with the chief, the game resets and asks me to start or load a game. Cannot progress to the meeting.
