If I can't find anything exactly the same with a couple searches, I continue on. And if there IS something similar out there, I'll at least know how to tweak it to make it more different. I've had a couple cases of unfortunate accidental-copying in the past (of a Cyanide & Happiness comic, no less) and by unlucky coincidence even details like the shirt colour ended up being the same! Not a good look.

Thanks, Björn! Yeah I agree it has a different vibe to it than Matt's, but it's just not a boat I want to rock any more than I already have (with a couple comics in the past that have ended up being unfortunately similar to Cyanide & Happiness comics).

Like bjorn, I would have liked to see your version of it. If you hadn't found that other comic via Google, you'd have pressed on regardless. What if other comics you've already done are out there but your search didn't find them? I'd go where your creative flow takes you, maybe just avoid searching for similar comic till you've finished to avoid any chance of plagiarism.

Still, your take IS a bit different than Matt’s, and in a complementary way methinks; in a characteristic way too; the hat guy’s predicament here IS kind of typical to him (in the typically endearing way), a variation on a familiar and relatable theme with a difference (more or less) in scenery. Had you wished to finalise it, perhaps (not necessarily “at least”) because it still had not been done YOUR way, I think it would have been as solid a statement as (m)any other. Anyway, thanks for the doodle! It was sufficiently developed to “suggest” a more finalised version to my mind...
