3 HOURS OF EXTRA CRISPY '92 FLAVORS
🕑 Added 2022-02-03 17:38:35 +0000 UTCHey y’all…here is a a crispy three hours of S&B from the summer of 1992! There are some gems here that are not available on streaming platforms, like JVC Force “Big Trax,” Percee-P “Puttin’ Heads to Bed,” Blunted Dummies “Sunshine,” and some others.
On our last monthly Zoom, Pep Luv from the Hieroglyphics was mentioned, so I had to grab this show, in which he made his NYC radio debut, to prove my point that he had/has one of the butteriest flows ever. What I didn’t realize at the time, but do now, was how much he sounded like Dres from Black Sheep. It’s crazy that he didn’t have more musical output during the 90s…homeboy was nice. I also realize now that I incorrectly stated that Pep Luv was originally named Snupe. Snupe, who was going by the name Snoopy just as Hiero were popping up on A&R radars in ’92, had to change his name after Snoop Dogg came out and splashed so hard with “Deep Cover,” which I actually played on this show. Coincidentally, I was with Snupe in Oakland just after “Deep Cover” dropped as a limited promo. The Hiero guys weren’t up on the record, and didn’t know anything about the Dogg, likely because it was a very East Coast sounding record that hadn’t made inroads in Cali yet. That’s kind of crazy, right? There are a number of West Coast records that I played, that got burn in NYC and the Tri-State before making any noise in Cali: Cypress Hill “Kill a Man,” Gets Boys “Mind Playin’ Tricks,” Pharcyde “Passin’ Me By” and the aforementioned “Deep Cover.” Anyway, I had to break it to Snupe that his name was taken, and that’s when he and Mike G became Extra Prolific.

Thanks for posting this show. For more of that early Hiero sound check out Pep Love & Jay Biz - The Shamen album. Recorded in the early/mid 90's but not released until 2003.
Well said my brother. We def had great times together in early-mid 90s chasing records and DJaying. The search for Souls of Mischief and Del No Need For Alarm albums was real. Def feels like yest and i can still remember vividly

30 years ago and it feels like yesterday at the same time. It's like Stretch said on the NY Times Popcast- the era of the 80's and 90's is becoming smaller and smaller a part of our overall lives as time marches on. Those two decades are now a shorter period of time than from now back to 92. Life is great but the memories of 80's childhood and early to mid 90's coming of age were the best time with the best sound track, imo.
Thanks for the write up, Stretch. I did totally believe that Pep went by Snupe but you weren’t that far off.
