The plane of Mechanus, brilliant and perfect, often finds itself under the threat of intrusion by those who work against the forces of law and order. Though its defenses proved more than sufficient to ward off any serious damage, the population of Mechanus found itself frustrated by the slipperiness of its invaders. Thus, the Ballisteye were launched as eyes in the skies, working to spot any lawlessness and restrict the movement of those responsible. Now, only the most foolish or confident dare test the boundaries of Mechanus, for the sights of the Ballisteye shall reveal all.
Guardian Constructs. By design, Ballisteye are perfectly suited to the task at hand; apprehending invaders who threaten the plane of Mechanus. Only necessary elements are included in their builds; swift fluttering winds, scopes that see beyond the physical realm, and ammunition specially engineered to prevent magical escape. The residents of Mechanus sleep soundly as these whirring drones flit about the skies in search of trouble.
Arcane Trappers. Tasked with a specific purpose, these winged drones are capable of sealing away specific arcane methods, and in doing so, trap their quarry upon Mechanus. Many an overconfident mage has met their end within a Ballisteye’s sights as their interplanar magic fizzles in their grasp. Those who manage to escape from the Ballisteye swarm quickly learn not to push their luck when it comes to dealing with Mechanus’ watchful eyes.
Duty Bound. Few are privy to the inner workings of a Ballisteye, even amongst the denizens of Mechanus. Theories abound, but without any concrete evidence each imaginative answer holds as little water as the last. It seems only Modrons are capable of communicating with the winged contraptions, lending credence to the idea that they may be of similar origin. Anything past this is merely speculation for those uninvolved in the Ballisteye’s creation.
You hear them before you see them. The usual clamor of the Mechanus streets becomes drowned out by a low murmur that seems to emit from all directions. Then, a veritable swarm of golden eyes and wings ascends, overtaking the city skyline moments before changing course. As you strain to make out any individual targets, arrows of light begin to sparkle like stars amidst the cloud of feather and metal.
