My dad’s family helped rebuild the town of Valdez, Alaska after the 1964 tsunami completely flattened it, so he thinks he would have recognized the signs and we would have been able to get back to our hotel room (high floor) but who knows. Similar to nick, we had a hard time contacting family to let them know we were ok, and when I returned to school after the holiday my teacher sobbed when she saw I was still alive. Completely crazy.

Omg my family was in Thailand for the tsunami as well! I was in third grade and we were also there for the holidays. We started in Phuket and took an early morning flight to Bangkok the day the tsunami happened. We didn’t even realize it had hit till later that day when we were resting in our hotel room, my dad had turned on the Thai news, and we recognized the lobby of the hotel we had JUST been staying at.
