I'm starting to think that Calliope was intending to die after she birthed Selene. She never expected to wake up. It'd fit with her self-sacrificing nature we saw in Stavros's flashback.

Sorry to hear that, bud. There were several points in the story that foreshadowed this, but I can’t account for execution. I’m far from perfect, unfortunately.

I'm very dissatisfied by the Oracle dying. It feels like there was no justification for it, no foreshadowing, and no real reason. It just happened, seemingly because the author needed to cause drama. It seems to be such a contrivance. I signed up to Patreon for this chapter, and I'm already regretting it.

Truly, the destruction of Olympia is squarely on their heads. Dimas told them they had no context; Socrates told them they where upsetting a very delicate balance. They moved

I don't think they're going to do that. This doesn't feel like something where the moral is that it can still be made right. Griffon and Sol already tried to do so. And in doing so, they've utterly destroyed Olympia in such a way that it would have been better if they'd never set foot in it at all.

I'm reminded of how earlier in the story, it's mentioned that a persons Ethos stands until it is challenged and tested. Here and now, Sol and Griffons has been proven wanting - they didn't have the ability to fix anything from the start. They've failed, and failed utterly. Calliope is dead, and with that, there is no possible way for this situation to be fixed. The Tyrants of Raging heaven will destroy each other, and when the games come, they'll be easy pickings for the ones who inherited their realms. They've destroyed Olympia. Who knows where they'll go from here.

I wonder how the wounds caused by Adamant work. Selene and Griffon cut their hands with that knife too, so if the wounds made by that blade don't close those two are going to bleed out. Maybe it's just a matter of intent? Calliope stabbed her own throat with the intent to die, while her children made light wounds on their palms just to share a bit of their blood with her, so maybe the wounds will close like normal for them rather than resist healing as was the case for Calliope?

Griffon is in shock, I think. He was kneeling with a vacant stare looking at his hands after his mother died, so I guess he wasn't able to formulate words or do anything. Solus could have done that, though. But I guess he didn't dare speak out because he was worried that he would mess with what Socrates was doing to trap Polyzalus and defend them. Then again, even if they could prove that Calliope killed herself, Polyzalus would have tried to kill them anyways.

RagingSamurai7

Was Griffin not able to show his 'lived experience' of Calliope killing herself to Polyzalus in order to clear his name? Or did he just not think of it in the moment?

I think your onto something my guy

We really gotta admire the level of foreshadowing of this event. Back when Griffon met the Oracle of the Broken Tide, she gave him a mask of a woman screaming in horror and told him "This isn't a mask. This is your future" And the mask had a word carved into its inner face. Now I wonder, was that word "Liar"? Or maybe "Mother"? And now, the Oracle's parting words to Griffon are fulfilled: "I am the first of your tribulations" Here it is, for the first time Griffon faces something that he can't stop, something that terrifies him and shocks him, something he can't strike nor dodge. A tragedy that hits him deep in his heart to the point of utterly transfixing him, a tragedy that he was powerless to prevent even as it unfolded right in front of him. A true tribulation.

Well, now we know what's their next quest: resurrecting Calliope. The token pass that Philadelphus gave Griffon will serve as a guide for their delve into Hades

Snakee

Everything went from bad, to apocalyptically bad for everyone on the mountain and possibly the city below.

Snakee
