You know, when Niko and the rest of his family see how pristine Griffon's robes look, they are going to think that he has taken extreme care to keep them well-maintained because they are very important to him or something.

A Legate is either the equivalent of a high-class Hero or a low-level Tyrant. Because all those that know about what the name implies treat Solus as such. Lefteris considered him equivalent to a Tyrant, at least. And in this chapter, despite the Butcher knowing that Solus is a low-rank Philosopher, he ALSO treats Solus as a Tyrant in his position as a Legate, as shown in how Dymas asks Solus what a Tyrant sees when he looks at the mirror, and how he accuses Solus of "the blindness common in men of his stature". Since Ivy (Anastasia's mother) could tell that Solus had a split foundation, I think the Butcher did the same. So I think he knows Solus is only a Philosopher, but he also knows that Solus was once more than that.

Solus is a legate and a early stage philosopher, is his Roman half stronger further along than a hero but less than a tyrant or is he the equivalent of an early/new tyrant? Given how diminished his power had become and yet he beat annastasia (or the fake one) by belting out a marching song.

"“You’ve made good use of the tools you’ve been given,” the Butcher spoke to us, ignoring the bristling ring of interlopers “But shadows and smoke aren’t enough to make up for what you lack. A Hero's senses are so much sharper than yours that they don’t even need their pneuma to spy on you. They’ll see you long before you see them.” "“You boys are Philosophers, though, and the world looks different to a thinking man than it does to a citizen. A Philosopher might have said a Tyrant is a man that sought refuge in ethos at the expense of logos and pathos. A Philosopher might have called such an existence the unavoidable fate of any great man given enough time to stagnate - curiosity fades and passion burns out, but no man is ever truly free of his hunger." The butcher clearly does not think them to be tyrants or heros.

Well, this chapter was a rollercoaster. So much to unravel here. I have mixed feelings regarding the Butcher's assessment of Polyzalus. On one hand, since Polyzalus's foundational virtue is Courage, it could be argued that he is the one who is more likely to have the guts to act first. He cultivates Courage, so he might just be bold enough to fight when the others did not dare and seize the advantage for himself. And yet, he is a man that has been cowed for about 200 years, he has been a fearful man for nearly 2 centuries, that must have left a mark on his cultivation. I'm surprised he didn't go into deviation because of it. So Polyzalus might actually be more vulnerable than the others in a certain way. And anything related to Damon Aetos might actually strike him directly in his soul. It also seems to me that even the Butcher is under the impression that Griffon is a Hero and Solus is a Tyrant, since he calls Griffon's answer the same as his (a Hero's answer) but says that Solus's answer is from higher (A Tyrant's answer). He ALSO seems to be under the impression that they have come to Olympia under orders of Damon Aetos, as part of a plan. He hints at that when he says Solus was "cast as the master" as in playing a role in a play, and when he mentions that "He always gets his way" I think he is referring to Damon. Dymas reveal was completely unexpected. That was Fotios's freed slave, so I wonder what made him stay in Olympia serving the Burning Dusk's faction as a killer for 20 years. Ivy running away like a little bitch was hilarious. This chapter was epic in many ways, very interesting, and with an unexpected plot twist. Awesome.
