🕑 Added 2023-09-01 19:50:44 +0000 UTCHey everyone!
One current issue we have on Patreon is how difficult it sometimes is for new patrons to catch up with all the content I constantly share here. So for today, since August is officially over, I thought it would be good to wrap up everything discussed during the past month in a quick summary. That way, whether you're new or not, you can decide what points to focus on.

Stylizing the 'Vibe': A Character Design/Illustration Technique
In this article, I focus on getting the vibe right in character design through three steps: shape, value, and color. Using bear inspired characters as examples, I begin with quick sketches for shape, then explore lighting and grayscale for mood. Color comes last, only after nailing shape and value. I end by saying that vibes are subjective, so it's okay if others see things differently.

Stylizing the 'Vibe' Part 2 - Outfit Design (Bears File + Process Video)
I talked about my unique approach to character design, learned at Riot Games, where I start with shapes instead of lines. I use the Limberto brush for initial sketches, making my work faster and helping me see how characters interact. I then pick outfits that vibe with each character's animal inspiration, like bears, and fine tune the design by adjusting values and blending modes. It's a different way to design characters, but definitely efficient.

I brought back a fan favorite article from 2021 about shading and values, updated with fresh insights. This one's locked now, but get on the "style seeker" pledge for monthly gems like this. "My Sketches Look Better Than My Final Pieces" - The Reason Why and How To Fix It!
I dived into why sometimes our sketches seem to outshine our final pieces. It's all about capturing that raw energy, and I gave tips on how to keep it alive even in polished work. We talked poses, facial expressions, and even how to handle non-organic objects. It's all about deciding what to keep sketchy and what to clean up without losing the essence. For those in the "Mastering Maestro" Tier and above, get ready for a deep dive into values and colors, complete with a video and PSD file.

Sketch, Shape, Story: How a Meme Inspired My Character Illustrations
I walked you through my creative process for bringing two charactersβa raven and a catβto life. Inspired by a meme, I focused on how to capture their unique dynamics through lines and shapes. It was all about keeping things rough yet effective, pulling from my recent "bear" illustration for technique. We also talked about the balance of strong lines with subtle colors and values. Oh, and a little redesign on the cat's hair for some extra edge.

Anatomy - From Static to Dynamic 3 Keys! + Exercise
I broke down the three main hurdles you might face when it comes to anatomy in character design: inconsistent proportions, static poses, and lack of depth. First, I gave a step-by-step on using geometric shapes as a foundation for accurate proportions. Then, I talked about how to amp up the dynamism in your poses, using tricks like line of action and balance. Lastly, I dived into adding depth through perspective and shading. There's a homework exercise at the end to help you put these tips into practice. Keep drawing; you've got this!

Composition: Balancing Four Characters - 'Gang Gang' Process & File
Went a little crazy with complexity, started with one character illustration and now I'm at four. This time it's not just about drawing four dogs; it's about telling a compelling story. Used big brush shapes and line art to get it just right. Focused on poses that capture each dog's "mood," and outfits that match their vibe. Worked in black and white to keep it simple. Wrapped it up with some top-right lighting for shadows. Check the PSD for more insights.

Conclusion
This is a provisional solution for content segmentation. Ideally, I think we should have a web-like list where you guys can search for specific keywords (like tags) and also have a navigation guide. I've poorly implemented this with the article pinned at the top of the site as a temporary measure while I work on a better solution. Thanks for your patience!
