Vacation Report

I really wanted to finally wrap it up instead of postponing further. There were people looking forward to it after all! I am also sick of leaving things half finished in my life - so here we are!
Took a while but better later than never, right?
皆さん、こんにちは！前回の投稿から間が空いてしまいましたが、ようやくこの旅行記を書き上げることができました。これ以上先延ばしにするよりも、最終的にまとめたかったんだ。楽しみにしてくれている人たちがいるのだから！私の人生において、物事を中途半端に終わらせることにはうんざりしている！
時間はかかったが、遅かれ早かれ、だろ？
Those who follow me on Twitter might have seen that I have been on a trip to Japan for Reitaisai a while ago, it was my first vacation in about... 7 years maybe!
Twitterをフォローしてくれている人なら、少し前に私が麗大祭のために日本へ旅行に行っていたことをご存知かもしれない。前回の休暇は7年ほど前だったので、私にとっては新鮮だった！
I'd like to write a bit about my trip and interesting experiences, but my main focus will be Reitaisai!
私の旅行や興味深い体験について少し書きたいと思いますが、私のメインは博麗神社例大祭です！
1. Preparation
The plan to attend has been done for a very long time. Originally I wanted to go last year, but then I heard that Stack wouldn't be attending and postponed my visit. Meeting Stack is the number 1 reason for me to go after all!
In order to talk to her eventually, I started studying Japanese and saving a bit of money on the side. Such is my biggest wish!
However, because Spring Reitaisai starts at about the worst imaginable time for traveling, nobody of my friends could come with me. 2 of my American online friends said they could (maybe) come, but in the end they couldn't either. At the time of such despair and darkness, a certain someone stretched out his hand to me. It was my father 😂
I thought the idea of my father coming with me to visit Japan was incredibly funny, so I was more than happy to hear that he'd come with me. He was probably just too worried about me going alone since my sense of direction tends to be very bad. There's also the matter that Japan is in a continent that nobody in our family has ever visited before.
But that's fine, I went with my dad in the end!
... but since matters with passports are a little more complicated with him, I had to take care of a LOT of paperwork beforehand... Either way, I managed to do everything in time, so it is fine, isn't it? (Albeit stressful..)
参加する予定は、かなり前から決まっていました。もともとは去年行きたかったのですが、Stackが参加しないと聞いて延期しました。スタックに会えることが、結局、行く理由の1番です！
いずれは彼女と話すために、日本語の勉強を始め、副業で少しずつお金を貯めています。それが私の一番の願いです！
しかし、春の博麗神社例大祭は、旅行には最悪の時期に始まるので、私の友人は誰も一緒に来ることができませんでした。アメリカのオンライン・フレンドのうち2人は、「行けるかもしれない」と言ったが、結局行けなかった。そんな絶望と暗闇の中、ある人が私に手を差し伸べてくれた。それは父でした😂。
父が一緒に日本に来るというのはすごい面白いと思っていたので、一緒に来てくれるというのは何より嬉しかった。方向音痴の私が一人で行くなんて、きっと心配でたまらなかったんでしょうね。日本が、私たち家族の誰も行ったことのない大陸にあるという問題もある。
でも大丈夫、結局は父と一緒に行ったんだ！
...でも、パスポートのことは、父と一緒だと少し複雑なので、事前にたくさんの書類を用意しなければなりませんでした...。いずれにせよ、なんとか間に合ったので、いいんじゃないでしょうか？(ストレスはありますが...)
It was a big gamble since I didn't know if Stack would actually attend Reitaisai and all the tickets etc had to be taken care of early. But when she announced a few days before the trip there would be signed postcards at the event of all the 3 members of Akatsuki Records, I was confident she'd come!
I wanted to bring a present as well, but it was hard to decide what I'd give them. I don't think the style of my big artworks are what the members of Akatsuki Records like, so I wanted to be a little more creative... I thought of perler beads and making a little figure of their mascot, but ultimately decided against it since I wasn't sure how that would've turned out in the end 🙃
In the end I decided to write a long letter with a few small handdrawn pictures. I also included the 10th anniversary picture and a photo of my collection inside. I hope it wasn't cringeworthy...
It was also my first time writing so much in Japanese and I was worried that my handwriting would be unreadable, so I included a machine printed version. I'm not sure if that was a good decision, but I wanted them to know my feelings, so I included it in case my writing was poor.
スタックが本当に博麗神社例大祭に参加するかどうかわからないし、チケットなども早めに手配しなければならなかったので、大きな賭けでした。でも、数日前に暁Recordsの3人のサイン入りポストカードを会場に用意すると言ってくれたので、必ず来てくれると信じていました！
プレゼントも持って行きたかったのですが、何をあげようかと迷いました。私の大作は暁Recordsのメンバーが好きなスタイルではないと思うので、もうちょっと工夫したくて...。ペルラービーズでマスコットのフィギュアを作ろうかと思ったのですが、最終的にどうなるかわからなかったのでやめました🙃
結局、長い手紙に小さな手書きの絵を数枚添えることにしました。10周年の絵とコレクションの写真も中に入れました。クドくなかったかな...。
また、日本語でここまで書くのは初めてで、自分の字が読めなくなるのが心配だったので、機械印刷したものを入れました。それが正解かどうかはわかりませんが、私の気持ちを知ってほしかったので、私の字が下手だったときのために入れておきました。
... And because the thrill of finally meeting the group that I adore so much and all my friends overseas, I couldn't sleep at all. I was constantly sleep depraved! 😂
... そして、憧れのグループや海外の友人たちにやっと会えたというドキドキ感からか、全然眠れませんでした。常に睡眠不足でした！😂
I was also under a lot of pressure because I really wanted to draw a picture for Mystic Square day and finish an artwork of Shinki before departing. So I ended up getting even less sleep. In the end everything turned out all right though, didn't it?

また、東方怪綺談の絵を描き、神綺の作品を完成させてから出発したかったので、かなりプレッシャーがありました。それで、結局、睡眠時間を削ってしまったんです。でも、結果的にはうまくいきましたね。

2. Arrival
We arrived in Japan after a very long flight (about 13 hours?) and sitting in an airplane for that long sure is rough.. We did have iPads given do us that had movies, music and so on, but they didn't really help me sleep either. What's more is that my phone had problems which made listening to the music on it impossible (this was a huge problem), so all I could do was remember all the music and play it inside my head...
長いフライト(13時間くらい？)を経て日本に到着したのですが、飛行機の中にずっと座っているのは確かにつらいですね。映画や音楽などが入ったiPadが配られましたが、これも眠れませんでした。さらに言えば、私の携帯電話には問題があって、音楽を聴くことができなかったので（これは大きな問題でした）、すべての音楽を記憶して頭の中で再生することしかできませんでした...。
When we arrived it started to kick in: the realization that I'm very far away from home. Most people couldn't understand English, and I was in no way confident in my Japanese speaking, especially since I've only spoken a few times in Discord voice chats before. But I had to give it my best shot, every talk was more precious practice until I had the chance to speak to the members of Akatsuki Records. And much to my surprise, people could understand me just fine! The taxi driver even said "日本語上手" (roughly translates to you're good at speaking Japanese), a phrase I'd end up hearing a lot during my trip. I'm not sure if people just wanted to be nice and praise me for something, but it helped me get more confident at speaking for sure! I noticed that my vocabulary was very very lacking at most times though, and understanding people was difficult every now and then. Thankfully, people were very understanding of the language barrier though, often opting to choose simpler words so I could understand. Thanks a lot for that, Japanese people I talked to 😇
到着してからは、「自分は家からとても遠いところにいるんだ」という実感が湧いてきました。ほとんどの人は英語を理解できないし、私は日本語を話すことに自信がありませんでした。しかし、暁Recordsのメンバーと話す機会を得るまで、話すたびに貴重な練習となり、全力を尽くす必要がありました。そして、驚いたことに、みんなちゃんと理解してくれたんです！タクシーの運転手さんからも「日本語上手ですね」と言われた。ただ単に褒められたいだけなのかは分かりませんが、会話に自信が持てるようになったのは確かです！しかし、私のボキャブラリーは、ほとんどの場合、非常に非常に不足しており、時々、人を理解することが困難であることに気づきました。しかし、ありがたいことに、人々は言葉の壁をとても理解してくれて、私が理解できるように、より簡単な言葉を選んでくれることが多かったです。ありがとうございました、日本人の皆さん 😇
At the hotel we were told we couldn't check in until later, so we just started our trip by visiting the Tokyo tower. Before coming to Japan, I had seen a lot of beautiful cosplayers, but I would have never thought that the entire country is filled with pretty women. That has to be one of my favorite parts of my trip...
After spending some time at the Tokyo tower and searching for something to eat (which was quite difficult given my circumstances), we headed back to the hotel to rest up (I really needed some rest from all the lack of sleep I had).
But the excitement was still too high, and I ended up barely sleeping.
I'd also like to praise the Japanese train system, you can really get everywhere rather quickly and it's quite simple too. Just had to get a Suica card at the airport and then I could use it to get everywhere.
ホテルでは、後までチェックインできないと言われたので、とりあえず東京タワーを見学して旅をスタートしました。日本に来る前に、たくさんの美しいコスプレイヤーを見てきましたが、日本全体がきれいな女性でいっぱいだとは思いもしませんでした。それが今回の旅で一番気に入ったところです...。
東京タワーでしばらく過ごし、何か食べるものを探した後（これは私の状況からするとかなり難しい）、ホテルに戻り休んだ（私は本当に寝不足で休みが欲しかった）。
しかし、興奮が冷めやらず、結局ほとんど眠れなかった。
また、日本の鉄道システムを賞賛したいと思います。空港でSuicaを手に入れれば、あとはそれを使ってどこにでも行けます。
3. Before Reitaisai
We went to various places, but sadly didn't try a lot of food. My father became very wary of the food since everything was so different from home... Whenever he saw something familiar like pizza, he immediately called out to me and pleaded how much he wanted to go eat pizza 😂 I've tried 2 different pizzas during my time in Japan, but I don't think they were much different from here. If anything, I think they were very thin and small.. Actually, most of the food was served in rather small portions, at least compared to European restaurants. Speaking of restaurants, almost every restaurant we went to wasn't very spacious.
Speaking of spacious, not only the restaurants, but the shops and the hotel didn't have big rooms either. The amount of tall buildings is impressive, but nearly every single one we went to didn't have much room inside to walk around. My father kept saying things like "the Japanese sure know how to make use of every meter". This was especially true when we visited Odaiba and saw bridges on top of each other.
There was a Chinese restaurant in Shinjuku I tried mapo tofu in, that must've been one of the best foods I've ever had.
いろいろなところに行きましたが、悲しいかな、あまり食べ物は試せませんでした。家とは何もかもが違うので、父は食べ物に対してとても警戒するようになりました...。ピザなど見慣れたものを見ると、すぐに声をかけてきて、ピザを食べに行きたいと訴えていました😂 私は日本滞在中に2種類のピザを食べましたが、こちらとあまり変わらなかった気がします。どちらかというと、すごく薄くて小さかったような気がします...。実際、少なくともヨーロッパのレストランと比べると、ほとんどの料理がかなり小さなポーションで提供されていました。レストランといえば、ほぼすべてのレストランがあまり広くはなかったですね。
広いといえば、レストランだけでなく、ショップやホテルも大きな部屋はなかった。高層ビルの多さには目を見張るものがありますが、私たちが行ったほぼすべてのビルの中は、歩き回るにはあまり広くないのです。父は「日本人は1メートル単位の使い方をよく知っている」(<- ここはちょっと訳が違いますね) と言い続けていました。特に、お台場に行ったときに、橋が重なっているのを見たときは、そう思いました。
新宿の中華料理屋で食べた麻婆豆腐は、今まで食べた中で一番おいしかったかもしれません。
On the day before Reitaisai, I actually met up with 2 online friends! Originally there was another person I wanted to meet up with, but she called the meeting off.
I'm thankful for my bros to still have stuck with me... It was my first time meeting any online friend in real life, so it was a pretty exciting experience. Thoughts like "So this is the face behind that name!" pop up inside your head.
博麗神社例大祭の前日、実はネット上の友人2人と待ち合わせをしました！元々、もう一人会いたかった人がいたのですが、その人が中止にしてしまったのです。
それでも付き合ってくれた兄弟に感謝です...。ネットの友達とリアルに会うのは初めてだったので、かなりドキドキしました。頭の中に「この人があの名前の顔か！」みたいな思いが浮かんできます。

一緒に写真を撮ったので、あまり自慢できないのですが、ざっくりとこんな感じの絵です：
We went on to take a lot of photos of shrines and saw a very funny street performer. Especially my father died laughing seeing him lol.
神社の写真もたくさん撮ったし、面白い大道芸人も見た。特に父はそれを見て笑い死にしました(笑)。
I had lots of fun and couldn't wait to meet everyone again on the next day! Until...
On the night of the same day Stack posted that she won't be attending the event.
とても楽しかったし、次の日にまたみんなに会うのが待ち遠しかった！でも...。
その日の夜、Stackがイベントに参加しないと投稿した。
I didn't want to let it drag me down though. I still had a lot of amazing people to meet and it was only Stack who wouldn't come, her brother and Neko Manjyu would still be present. It also helps that a fellow fan kept me company that night!
でも、そんなことに引きずられたくはなかった。まだ会いたい素晴らしい人たちがたくさんいたし、来ないのはStackだけで、彼女の兄とねこまんじゅうはまだいる。その夜はファン仲間が相手をしてくれたのも助かった！
I still remember it really well...
今でも本当によく覚えている...
4. Reitaisai
It was finally time! After crying my heart out and sleeping for 4 hours, I was ready to head out! Woohoo!
I was hoping that people would recognize me so I went and brought my Shinki fumo with me. I also think it was the best time to take her out, since I usually always keep her at home.
I met up with a friend at the station and then we went together. Despite the shock from yesterday, I was still raring to go! Lots of people to meet and I wanted to buy the new album!
ついにその時が来た！大泣きして4時間寝た後、出かける準備ができた！わーい！
みんなに認識めてもらいたかったから、神綺のふもふもを連れて行ったんだ。いつもは家で飼っているので、連れて行くにはベストなタイミングだったと思う。
駅で友人と合流し、一緒に出かけた。昨日のショックにもかかわらず、私はまだ行く気満々だった！たくさんの人に会えるし、新しいアルバムも買いたかった！
I went without my father on this day. Aside from Shinki and some music, he knows nothing about Touhou lol
この日、私は父を置いて出かけた。神綺と音楽以外、東方のことは何も知らない(笑)
We missed the correct entrance because it looked like there was another event going on, too lol
別のイベントも開催されているようだったので、正しい入り口を見逃しました(笑)
On my way to the queue to enter I have seen Miko-san, she was as cute in person as she is in all the dancing videos.. She also wore a Cirno cosplay on this day!
入場待ちの列に向かう途中、Mikoさんを見かけた。ダンスビデオで見るのと同じくらい、実物のMikoさんもかわいかった。この日はチルノ のコスプレもしていた！
Once I got in my top priority was getting the new Akatsuki Records CD! And since I'm bad with directions, I went to the completely wrong side!
I panicked a little because I heard the lines would get super long and the CDs sell out fast... But after a little bit of strategic searching, I finally found them. I knew what Neko Manjyu looked like before since I had seen the nicovideo stream, but for Stack Bros it was my first time.
The closer I got to them the stronger my heartbeat was, I was afraid I wouldn't get words out when it would have finally been my turn.
ホール入って最優先したのは、暁Recordsの新しいCDを手に入れることだった！そして、方向音痴の私は、完全に道を間違えてしまった！
CDはすぐに売り切れるし、列は超長くなると聞いていたので、ちょっとパニックになった...。でも、ちょっと戦略的に探して、やっと見つけた。ねこまんじゅうはニコニコ動画で見たことがあったので、どんな人かは知っていたけど、でもStack Brosは初めて。
近づけば近づくほど鼓動が激しくなり、やっと自分の番が回ってきたというのに、言葉が出てこないのではないかと心配になった。
When it was finally my turn I saw him properly. He was rocking a "cool" look. As expected of the main arranger of Akatsuki Records!
I asked if it was fine to talk to him for a while later, and he said it would be fine depending on whether there would still be a long queue later.
I gave him the letter I prepared and then moved on for the time being - As a very happy man since I bought my first album from them in person!
やっと自分の番が回ってきたとき、私はちゃんと彼を見た。彼は "クール "な表情をしていた。さすが暁Recordsのメインアレンジャーである！
この後しばらく彼と話をしてもいいかと尋ねると、この後まだ長蛇の列ができているかどうかにもよるが、大丈夫だという。
私は用意した手紙を渡し、ひとまず移動した。初めて暁Recordsでアルバムを買ったので、とても嬉しかった！
After this it was time to roam for a little and check out all the shops and buy gifts for my friends. I found a lot of nice shops and took lots of pictures of pretty cosplayers!
この後は少し歩き回って、すべての店をチェックし、友人たちへのお土産を買った。素敵なお店をたくさん見つけて、可愛いコスプレイヤーの写真をたくさん撮った！
I loved all the ones I've seen, especially that one Yumemi (I really regret not having asked for her name...) I can't post the picture either since you can see my face in it too... sorry!
今まで見た中で、特にあの夢美 （名前を聞かなかったことを本当に後悔している...）が好きだった。僕の顔も写っているから、写真も載せられないんだ...ごめんね！

Later on I got to meet with a lot of fans of Akatsuki Records! It was really fun because now I know what everyone who comments under every post looks like lol
The Yukari-sama in this picture was a very nice person who spend a lot of time talking to me prior to the event and gave me a wonderful gift! I am infinitely grateful...
(There were too many people to draw every single one of them, so I only drew this picture I took a group photo of, sorry everyone who wasn't included...)
Everyone looked very cool!
I want to meet everyone again. The time we spend together was short (and funny due to the language barrier), but I really treasure it.
その後、暁Recordsの多くのファンと会うことができた！毎回記事の下にコメントしてくれる人たちの顔がわかったので、本当に楽しかったです(笑)
この写真に写っている紫 様はとても素敵な方で、イベント前にたくさんお話してくださり、素敵なプレゼントもいただきました！感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです...。
(人数が多すぎて一人一人描ききれなかったので、集合写真を撮ったこの絵だけ描きました。写っていない皆さんごめんなさい...)
みんなとてもかっこよかった！
またみんなに会いたい。一緒に過ごした時間は短かったけど（言葉の壁もあって可笑しかった）、本当に大切な時間だった。
I also went to meet a few friends from the Touhou Puppet Dance Performance community. Sadly I didn't get to meet with everyone, but I am very happy regardless! Perhaps next time I can meet up with the others?
また、幻想人形演舞のコミュニティの友人たちにも会いに行った。残念ながら全員とは会えなかったけど、とにかくとても嬉しい！次回はみんなと会えるかな？
Seiga (My friend) shook my hand for a full minute, that was the longest handshake of my life!

Afterwards I went back to check on Stack Bros again to see if there was still a long line. Fortunately, at that point, almost everyone has already disappeared, so he was free for a little chat in a bit. In the meantime, I also got to meet Wata, another very incredible cosplayer. She was wearing a Marisa cosplay at the time.

Her English was really good, the first person I met in Japan who could speak English that well. She won't admit it though lol.
その後、まだ長蛇の列が続いていないか、もう一度StackBrosの様子を見に行った。幸いなことに、その時点ではもうほとんどみんないなくなっていたので、彼はもう少ししたら自由におしゃべりができるようになった。その間に、もう一人のとても素晴らしいコスプレイヤー、棉にも会うことができた。彼女は魔理沙のコスプレをしていた。

彼女の英語は本当に上手で、日本で初めてあんなに英語が上手な人に会った。でも、彼女は認めないけどねw。
Now it was finally time, I could talk to Stack Bros. My heart was pounding like crazy. I was practicing what I wanted to say for the longest time, so I think I managed to get my feelings across well enough to the point he could understand them. (Remember, my Japanese isn't very good) I think I managed pretty well to not embarrass myself there 😂
I have also asked him to sign my copy of the bonus CD for their 10th anniversary. The one with Shinki on it. And he did! While he did it I had to contain myself since my heart was about to jump out of my chest and my knees were about to give out from the excitement.
When he was done and gave me the CD back, he stretched out his hand. It was just a handshake, but at that point I was overwhelmed. My body didn't register it yet and instinctively shook his hand, but when it was over I suddenly started crying in front of him.
Wata, who was standing next to me at that time, thought that was pretty amusing...😂
いよいよStackBrosと話す時が来た。ずっと言いたいことを練習していたので、なんとか彼が理解できる程度には自分の気持ちを伝えることができたと思う。(私の日本語があまり上手でないことを忘れないでください）そこで恥をかかずに済んだのは、かなりうまくいったと思います😂。
10周年のボーナスCDにもサインをお願いしました。神綺が入ってるやつ。そして彼はしてくれた！サインをしてもらっている間、私は心臓が飛び出そうになり、興奮で膝が出そうになったので、自分を抑えなければならなかった。
CDを返し終わると、彼は手を伸ばした。握手だけだったが、その時点で私は圧倒されていた。まだ体が覚えていなくて、本能的に握手をしていたのだが、それが終わると、彼の前で急に泣き出してしまった。
そのとき隣にいた棉は、それがとても可笑しかったらしい...😂。

I wanted to ask Neko Manjyu as well, but he seemed busy with something and I was too embarassed to return at that point, so I didn't get his autograph this time.
I think that is my biggest regret of the trip.
But all the more reason to go again, right? I hope next time Stack will be there.
ねこまんじゅうにも聞きたかったのだが、彼は何かと忙しそうだったし、その時点で戻るのは恥ずかしかったので、今回はサインをもらえなかった。
それが今回の旅の最大の心残りだ。
でも、だからこそまた行きたいんだよね。次回はStackが来てくれることを願っている。
Afterwards I just checked out more shops. The event was pretty short, I think it was about 4-5 hours long?
その後、さらに多くの店をチェックした。イベントはかなり短く、4～5時間くらいだったかな？
5. After Reitaisai
I had bought a bunch of CDs, but I couldn't listen to them until I was home so I bought a really shitty CD player 😂
Most of my remaining time was spend me visiting shrines, shops and some sightseeing. I also tried some restaurants I really wanted to check, but I don't think it was enough. Next time I go, I want to eat lots and lots of food.
CDをたくさん買ったんだけど、家に帰るまで聴けなかったから、クソみたいなCDプレーヤーを買ったんだ 😂
残された時間の大半は、神社や商店を訪ねたり、観光したりして過ごした。どうしてもチェックしたかったレストランにも行ってみたが、十分ではなかったと思う。次に行くときは、たくさんたくさん食べたい。
And then it was already over. At the airport I also got to meet another friend. He even gave me a parting gift, I was overjoyed!!
As a thanks, I had drawn Letty (his favorite) as soon as I got home again.
そして、それはすでに終わっていた。空港ではもう一人の友人にも会えた。彼は餞別までくれた！
お礼に、帰ってすぐにレティ（彼のお気に入り）の絵を描いた。
6. Afterword
Thanks a lot for reading all of this. Honestly I wanted to finish this a long time ago (as soon as I got home actually) but things kept happening that made focusing on this quite impossible. I'm very happy you had a wonderful trip, as Japan is the place that many people would love to visit! I also hope to visit the country, as well as see all my favorite artists over there. :)

It's real, my sense of direction is anime comic relief character tier 😂 Strangely enough, I didn't seem to have any problems in Japan. Especially the trains were so easy to understand that I could deal with it there much easier than where I live. Also I hope that if you plan to go at some point, we could maybe meet up! And yup, it would be awesome if I could meet Stack the next time...

That trip sounds like it was a blast! I've always wanted to attend an event like this so hearing about it from someone in a similar boat is reassuring. Reading about your bad sense of direction was funny but I'm glad things worked out in the end for you too! Hopefully next year you finally get to meet Stack!!
