Do A GoFundMe Campaign?
🕑 Added 2024-10-18 11:41:05 +0000 UTCAll this week I have been considering whether or not to do a GoFundMe to help with the burden of debt I find myself within. Although, I have to acknowledge that some have been very generous in their response, which does help.
My considerations for starting one are this: It helps me pay off the new computer, monitor and would allow me the opportunity to get additional storage to replace the corrupt back-up. Because, right now, I don't have one. That's not ideal. The total I have in mind is $2,000 CAD. That will cover all the necessary equipment. Anything beyond that would go to additional accessories, like an audio interface, a swing arm to attach my microphone to my desk and additional storage.
What I'm weighing is the aforementioned support I've already received. And, as ridiculous as it may seem, I don't want to project the appearance of using my supporters to pay for equipment that is necessary for the channel to function. There's a part of me that says, "Just do the damn work and justify the good will you've received."
I don't know...maybe I'm too Canadian.
So I put it to you to help me come to a conclusion. The majority vote will help me with this decision. I'll give it a few days and take in your comments and make a decision on Sunday.

I’ve given money, I’m at your highest support level on Patreon, and I’m still gonna pop some in on the GFM. Like someone said above, my Patreon support goes to past, present, and future videos. Extra $$$ goes to help you out of the hole. Also, I agree that anyone who follows you knows that this isn’t a grift move. We want to help keep you rolling.

Nothing wrong with asking for help in such a polite, humble and straightforward manner. Many people chipping in even just a few bucks and probably a few giving more than a few bucks = funded!

I'd see a gofundme in response to a specific event, or even directed at specific equipment, as different from the monthly sub. The sub is, for me at least, part support for new videos and part thank you for the videos I didn't support: I don't have any difficulty separating them in my mind, and the patreon won't stop me throwing in for the gofundme.

Detroiter here, and I grew up on the border. Midwestern US has a similar culture so I get it to some degree. People clearly like your work and they’re willing to pay for it. I only get annoyed with content creators when they stop creating content but still keep billing my credit card. That doesn’t sound like what you’re up to at all. A gofundme is nice because it’s specific and a one time deal.

Thank you very much. I never really think of it in that terms. I always think of the quality you, the audience, deserve. And I try my best to match that expectation. (Even though, I realize no one but myself has that expectation. I'm Canadian and weird. So, forgive me on this.)

I've expressed by views on this over at the Discord, but the other thing I didn't say there is asking just gives us choice. You doing this gives people who want to help a simple and easy way to do it. If they have helped via another route then they have the choice to adjust support as folks see fit and works for them. Anyone here clearly values what you do, so doing a go fund me allows us, by choice to express that in a practical way at a specific point of 'need'. And let's be honest it won't be an altruistic act we all want more of the hot comic talk so those that can will I imagine and relish an easy way to feed the emotion guilt for you having to give us more, more, MORE!

I don’t think you need to be cagey about doing a go fund me. Your patrons and YouTube followers should know by now you’re not here for the grift. If any outsiders accuse you of that, then they should look at the many hundreds of thousands of people who ask for money online without doing the due diligence you have. U have every right to get a go fund me going and you don’t need to apologise for it. You’ve done the work. You deserve the benefit of the doubt.

I find it odd that you are uncomfortable with using funds given to you to pay for equipment. As someone who donated funds, that’s exactly something I expect the money to be used for. I hope that at some point you’ll be bringing in enough money to not only pay for gear but to improve your personal quality of life as well. You create good things. Get paid for it.
