Quick Review: Devil By The Deed - Master's Edition
🕑 Added 2024-02-23 00:48:45 +0000 UTCHere's a quick look at the Matt Wagner's recent reworking of the Hunter Rose saga. Unfortunately, I refer to it as "Remastered" not "Master's." I think that's forgivable.

I want to get into Grendel. This sold out very quickly and I regret not getting it. Hopefully it will get another printing or put into one of the omnibus editions.

I did a little more reseach on the subject. In the comic, Hunter Rose is told this by an imp. So it may false information. Demons are known to lie. I dont think it has anything to do with the Grendel from Beowulf. Maybe Matt Wagner just left it there as a backdoor to a story he may or may not do. Or Wagner can just say that the imp was lying and Hunter Rose is the first Grendel.

Uhhh yes please.

That's a great question. I don't recall that implication (I mean, I read it forever ago) and I might have to pull that out and see. I would presume he might have been referencing the first, actual Grendel from Beowulf? That would make sense.

More Jason books will definitely refill your nerd meter. Why haven't I done a review of his work yet? That's simply ridiculous. I must make a note to do that very soon.

When I read the "Behold the Devil" Grendel miniseries. It was kind of implied that Hunter Rose was not the first Grendel. I wonder if that is something that Matt Wagner will ever touch upon.

Okay, okay this is my second massive nerd fail of the week - the first had a happy ending, as does this. As a BIG Matt Wagner fan how did I not know this existed? What has happened to my nerd powers of late... I mean sure I've been busy with one thing and another but that's no excuse for not noticing new Matt Wagner?!? The happy ending is due to you correcting my nerd fail and me deciding that was well as immediately buying this I should buy more Jason books to see if that helps restore my nerd strength at the same time... we'll see. Anyway thanks I owe you something else now. Next time your in Sheffield, UK I'll buy you a pint.

That is pretty awesome. Congratulations on the getting the artwork and the limited edition. That's very cool beans!

Long time Grendel fan! I bought a spread and an additional page from this, and was lucky enough to score one of twelve ultra limited uber editions! Gorgeous! Thank you for covering this release!

I get what you mean. I agree it was implied, definitely.

I haven't read the original but read this and although i enjoyed the comic it seemed to kinda drag on. I don't know where the new story additions are but I feel that all the various details of Hunter expanding empire bogged down the pacing.

Very well put!

Matches my thoughts a lot! I do think theres an interesting contrast with Mage where he continued telling the story but lost the thread of what made it special, and Hunter Rose whose story he clearly feels he needs to keep fleshing out and refining.

I think it was kind of implied that he was a little too interested in her. But I can't think of a specific passage. It may be something that *seemed* to be true, but there was nothing in the story to *say* it was true. If that makes sense.

Am I misremembering, or was it easy to read an inappropriate interest in Stacy by Hunter in the original comic? Regardless, great review. I found this comic to be a really fun and respectful update on the original Grendel.

You're welcome! Looking at your avatar, I'm not surprised you already own this. :) Vivat Grendel!
