Rowan Atkinson actually races cars for fun and he's owned lots of fancy cars over the years. I know in the 90's he had a McLaren F1 because he crashed it! lol He was certainly helped in this episode by driving the Mini though, such a great little car. My little sister used to make fun of me as a kid by saying my run was like Mr Bean's at the pool! One thing I do notice from seeing these as an adult is how skilled a driver Rowan Atkinson is! Speedily reverse parking round a corner, stopping on a dime with barely a couple of inches either side of the barrier and the bin...damn! Oh, and in the book "Mr Bean's Diary" (which I still have somewhere after all these years!) it's revealed his date's name is Irma Gobb. Which these days just make me think of the 'Ermahgerd' meme :)

Quite fun to imagine this episode as the origin story of Patrick from One Foot In The Grave: driven to quit his lucrative job as a lifeguard by the antics of an artisan-sandwich-improvising nudist maniac, he seeks a saner life in the suburbs, only to find himself next door to the carpet-mowing, gnome-hoarding Victor Meldrew. (Joking aside, I'm pretty sure Angus Deayton must have got cast in OFITG on the strength of his reactions to Mr Bean in this; it's exactly the same half-incredulous, half-infuriated expression that Patrick permanently wears around Victor, and he nails it every time.)

I'm pretty sure this episode was solely responsible for my lifelong fear of horror movies. I didn't even watch one until I was an adult and I swear this scene must have been what put me off. Just the fact you couldn't actually see what they were seeing was terrifying to me for some reason!

Referring to what you were saying at the beginning; a good tip from Bob Mortimer's autobiography: when you're buying potatoes in the supermarket, slightly tare the plastic wrapping, scratch then smell the potato. If it smells good and earthy not of nothing then go for them! Good tip 😂
