Lol I agree man, it's super expensive where I'm at to go out for drinks.

Just go and have a bad pint down the feathers. You'll be shitting through the eye of a needle

Yeah mate, I think that's why it's so relatable and heartwarming. I definitely see aspects of my family life growing up, in the Royles.

Claire Prowse

My dad was from Ashburton Devon! He came up in about '63 to join the metropolitan police.

Charlie

My dad arrived in London from rural Devon in 1968 and had a similar experience, he reckons it was actually pretty seedy and run-down at the time, where my mum was born and grew up was pretty crime-ridden, she remembers as a kid seeing someone she knew running through all the back gardens in the street with a gun and being taken around in a police car afterwards to find him. But the thing was, it was more open and free and fun. As naff as it sounds people moved there to "make it" or to escape the conservatism (small C) of the provinces, because you could. And then gentrification happened and spoiled everything, and you couldn't just do that anymore. London actually ended up becoming a bit of a wasteland with everything being paved over by developers, or becoming out of the financial reach of the working and middle class, and it's suffered greatly for it. It may be "cleaner" (although a lot of it isn't really), but it's less open, and it's not fun anymore. It's shit for me knowing that my parents' generation got that world, and by the time my generation came of age several of decades later it had all been taken away.

Those little sweet moments that we see in the Royle Family , Could represent real life families. They give each other stick, they can be horrible to each other, but they do love each other. They will always have each other’s back.

Chris

Just moved back to Wiltshire after 25 years in London. Pints here aren't much less

Charlie

He's probably long dead, but interestingly his publishing company still exists.

Right Said Brett

"They'd managed to get an appointment with a music industry suit called Freddie Poser, who upon being given this demo to listen to, electrocuted himself on the record player and threw them out in a rage." This Freddie fella sounds like a right poser.

I love this episode. Haven't been to London since 1991 when I was 18. I was born in Islington but never been back. Mum worked in London in the 60s. Her coming from Wales it was a huge adventure for her. She said London was magical in the 60s. Flower power was in full swing. Not much crime....I think everyone was too stoned!

Closest i've been to London is Heathrow Airport. Just like Jim, I wouldn't pay their prices for a pint, pre-Covid it was £2.50 at my local pub but the same pint was £5.50 in London. (my brother told me after he'd been to London) I'd want the Queen herself pouring me a pint for that sort of price!

Charlie

This episode reminds me of an amusing story. My dad was a teenager in the sixties and early seventies and with a friend's band had taken their demo around the music publishers and record labels that still existed in the West End at the time, like Antony and Darren planned to do. They'd managed to get an appointment with a music industry suit called Freddie Poser, who upon being given this demo to listen to, electrocuted himself on the record player and threw them out in a rage. On the subject of the cost of a pint in London, the most I paid was £7 at the Oval a few months ago, with £1 being a deposit on a returnable glass that it then turned out couldn't be returned.

Keith Pratt

£3 for a pint in London. The last time I went to London was in 2019 and it was almost double that.

Sam Reeves

One of my favorite episodes!

Have been looking forward to this, thanks for the earlier upload Josh
