I thought she really meant it based on what she’s telling Red. She has shown in chapter 2 that she can talk a big game to someone else, then when she’s alone with Red and the pups, she’ll tell the truth of how she really feels about a situation.

I love how drastically different Swift sounds when she's describing her observations versus talking to Rask in the moment. She's trying to intimidate him but it's mostly bluster, she just doesn't want him to know what she's really thinking. So of course he's eavesdropping on her
