The idea is that the Vikings (and Rufus) are speaking Norwegian, while the new slaves are speaking English. So they technically don't understand each other. Until they encounter a slave who speaks both Norwegian and English. The fact that you (as an English viewer) understand what they're all saying, can be considered minor detail, perhaps because the Norwegian is automagically translated for you as soon as the words leave the Vikings' mouths. (In reality, it's because every scene in this series was produced first in Norwegian, and then in English, using the same actors who speak both languages. If you watched the show in Norwegian dub, that whole slave scene would probably make a lot more sense.)
