One More Thing: Wick Walker
🕑 Added 2025-04-24 17:00:13 +0000 UTCGreetings Adventurers,
Ever since we did the Wick axe a few months back, I've been obsessed with the candle aesthetic and really wanted to explore that environment a lot more. It was with this in mind that I pitched the Wick Walker to Fernando and in typical fashion, he was on board. The chain hook and chandelier was all his doing, but they fit the aesthetic so well that I knew I had to bring them into the mechanics as well. We hope you enjoy our latest creation.

Design notes from Matthew:
There's so many unique themes around old and forgotten places of worship, but few are as inspiring to me as those pictures of long burning candles with mountains of wax around them. I've seen it brought up in a lot of games recently, especially in the Dark Souls series and I was absolutely inspired by them in creating this behemoth of wax. You can do some really interesting things with a material like this and I couldn't wait to delve into putting together this monster.
I think the ambiguity of the nature of these Wick Walkers is something really interesting. They can range from placid protectors to vengeful beings seeking to end all who enter their domain. That kind of variance can make for interesting moments where players meet a friendly one in one place, but a hostile one in another, catching them off guard. I like to write creatures that can be at home in settlements as well as dungeons and this was a good opportunity to do so.
The actual mechanics of this one came together quite easily. I love that I'm able to give the creatures a bit more in the was of options through actions, bonus actions, reactions, so on so forth. I think having these elements can make for a fun surprise when the creature does something players wouldn't always see. What I'd said is always give your monsters one more thing you think they need. Even if it's just a fun roleplay thing. It's those little details that give them life.
Now that we're nearing the end of April, it's time to start thinking about summer. We have some vacations and things of that nature planned, but worry not, we'll keep the content flowing for you all.
