Aliens 4k review - early access download
🕑 Added 2024-05-20 02:22:35 +0000 UTCI decided that if I was going to do this video that I needed to do it in HDR, which complicates YouTube uploads in a lot of ways. Specific metadata had to be injected to the file for YT to display the HDR correctly, and then a look-up table had to be attached for YT to correctly tonemap the SDR version.
HDR videos this long can take over a full day to process, so checking and correcting any issues can take several days. I looked at all that bullshit and told it to go to hell. You've been waiting long enough for this one so I'm sharing the file directly.
The final upload will have some tweaking and narration replacements, and the credits are not in yet, but I don't expect major changes. If you'd rather wait, it will take a few more days for the final version to go public.
Here's how to take advantage of the HDR:
If you have an HDR monitor- you can play the file directly with VLC or Media Player Classic as long as HDR is enabled in your Windows system settings (I've found MPC with the K-lite codec pack to handle HDR better).
If you don't have an HDR monitor but do have a 4k TV- You should be able to put the file on a USB stick and play it on most modern TVs or UHD disc players. If you have both, I'd start with the UHD player.
If you don't have either- you can still watch in SDR, but some of the comparisons won't make as much sense. I've included HDR measurements on-screen to help communicate what's going on... I'd actually be interested in your feedback about whether it's easy to follow this way or not.

This may be the nerdiest video I've ever put together. I don't expect everyone to be into this, and I don't expect to make much more content like this, but someone needed to spank James Cameron's ass and put him in his place. Keep an eye out for him in the poorhouse in the very near future.

Apart from the ones I showed in the intro, The Dark Knight is another one with great HDR usage. A lot of Tim Burton's older stuff, like Beetlejuice, is also great on 4k. Suspiria might be my favorite

My OLED TV, phone, and new monitor weeps as it puts up with crappy compressed content. I have bought my 4K HDR Blu-Ray player and started my collection... Best Buy could be a way to convert normies to better remasters of old classic movies, but they put out low quality content on their TVs.

Hey nerrel do you have any good recs for movies that showcase HDR/oled well? I bought one of those first-gen monitors and don't really have developed taste in movies so yea LOL Thx :)
