🕑 Added 2022-11-20 04:48:13 +0000 UTCThe Steam Deck editing already made me run late for reviewing this one, so I took the opportunity to switch to new editing software and re-learn the basics. Hitfilm worked well for the first few years of the channel but in the past year the rendering became bugged and the program crashed as often as four times a day.
The Steam Deck video was held back a day or two because it literally couldn't finish the render:
So I've switched to Davinci Resolve for now, though you probably won't be able to tell any difference while watching. It's a lot more CPU intensive, so I'll be upgrading my system in the next few weeks to keep up- thanks again for your support, which allows me to do this kind of thing.
I'll also be replacing my busted, twenty year old synthesizer. A lot of people complained about high pitched noise during the transitions of the Steam Deck video, which likely came from the failing analog outputs on this thing:
I plan to record more music for the texture tutorial video coming up, so double-thank you for helping to fund all of this upkeep.

Thanks, I'll look into that. I still have no idea how to do composite shots with nodes yet, figuring that out is my next step

As someone who also uses DaVinci Resolve, I'd caution that a hardware upgrade will help, but it may not give you as much of a performance boost as you'd get from transcoding your source files to an editing codec like Prores or DNxHR. They're much larger files, but I've seen performance gains of at least 4-6x using them instead of delivery codecs like H.264. Resolve has an option to generate these automatically but I find it kind of slow and heavy-handed, since game footage doesn't always need the highest presets for them. I find Shutter Encoder to be the best way to get it done myself. If you don't have the hard drive space for full-resolution transcodes, you can also transcode into an editing codec at a lower resolution to edit off of, then swap back to the original source files when you're ready to export. Apologies for the unsolicited advice dump, but I struggled a lot with performance issues in Resolve and this was by far the biggest improvement I saw.
