patreonizing

>Kes is going to stay with us for the time being. That’s his preference. >He was being given the keys to the kingdom, and it was only a question of whether they’d let him entangle himself back in the conflict instead of sitting on the sidelines. Probably reading too much into it, but this makes me trust the Farfinders a bit less, if they're misrepresenting Kes' preferences. Cue future high-magitek "if you're under duress, key your handset twice" scene.

What surprises me is that Kes (Perry too) is continually surprised when impartial 3rd parties keep telling him Actually You're A Fairly Violent Guy. You'd think he'd update his self-image by now after several worlds of reckoning with anger problems. (Werewolf rage certainly doesn't help, but Perry also didn't *need* that bloodlust to be, well, bloodthirsty.)

I'm surprised that Kes is surprised by the Thresholder survival rate. Knowing the Grand Spell favours even matches, and we've seen just how absurdly resilient most thresholders can be, 'hanging on' and defying attempts at a coup de grace a few more moments to reach a portal doesn't seem far-fetched at all. And that's even if the Thresholder even considers it a priority. How many losses was Cosme at, like... 11? Also, grats on appearing to possibly not have long covid (though it can still turn up a month or two later). I've got it and the cognitive impairment is... not great. A little noticeable to others, a huge amount to myself. It's very difficult to describe to others when you know you've lost that mental agility, what it's like to actually drop your intelligence by a significant degree. It's more than just 'brain fog'... it's your 'holding space' to hold concepts and figures up to measure against each other (the size of your mental jotter pad), your speed and thoroughness at finding the angles and aspects of problems, the rush towards ill-considered or incorrect judgements and conclusions that don't consider the angles, reaching into your vocabulary for things you know to be there and simply coming up empty (lucky to grab something even adjacent), the sheer amount of time and effort consumed to work through logic... it's horrifying. When trying to relate this it feels like people either don't give that *existential* impairment the weight it deserves or simply can't imagine it.
