I saw you write a message in one of Northernlion's Balatro videos once. I would absolutely love a Balatro review from you, if you think you have enough to say about it.

I somehow missed the second sentence and started frantically searching for this game.

I totally agree with you about Massive Chalice. What I was expecting was Crusader Kings as the strategic layer and a medieval magic X-Com style tactical layer (King Arthur Knight’s Tale is this, and it’s great), but what I got was what you describe. Wildermyth is a much better attempt at the intergenerational hero-breeding concept.

Will check them out!

I end up writing a review for a game once every year or two, and don't always post them. One of the reasons I like having a blog is that it's not contentified, it's just whatever I felt like doing at the moment, and it's fine if it goes "dead". Here are a few that went on the blog (there's another for Hogwarts Legacy and Pikmin 4 are either unfinished or unpublished, I think I lost steam on both reviews): Elden Ring: https://alexanderwales.com/game-review-elden-ring/ Assassin's Creed Valhalla: https://alexanderwales.com/game-review-assassins-creed-valhalla/ Massive Chalice: https://alexanderwales.com/review-massive-chalice/

Your writing is so good. Have you considered writing actual video game reviews?

Sounds a lot like Dwarf Fortress created by someone who only knows games inspired by dwarf fortress.

This was beautiful. I’m also fascinated by stories about stories that don’t exist.. not in the usual way.. but like The Yellow King, House of Leaves, or this.

This sounds like a “fishtank” game, almost no role in it for a player! I remember first playing Majesty, an RTS from the early 2000’s, having previously played Warcraft, and being intrigued by how the removal of the ability to directly control units, paradoxically added to the fun of the game. All you could do to motivate units was offer rewards, it was up to their own internal logic as to what they actually did. Underhill sounds like it might be similarly fun.

iridium248

Sounds like Dungeon Keeper, or a graphically advanced Dwarf Fortress!

Normally I love your writing, but in this case I hate it. You make me want a nonexistent game so much when it doesn't exist, and that's just mean.

Leaf

Now you’ve made me long for a game that doesn’t exist
