Any gun that reaches 1 inch is just called a cannon 5 inch guns are commonly put on Destroyers for the purpose of hitting small inbound boats like PT boats or smaller navel vessels. Its also used to shell soft locations on shore ect.

On the .950 JDJ/Bolter stuff, the fat mac is actually very similar both in caliber and cartridge dimensions to the Heavy bolter's .998 caliber bolt shell (caliber is measured in inches, so both of them are just under an inch in diamater. The only difference is that in addition to the huge kinetic force, the bolt shell is rocket propelled to increase its velocity and effective range even further, and has an explosive charge. The standard .75 caliber bolter round is exactly the same just a bit smaller, more comparable to the size of a 12 gauge shotgun shell.

I want to push back on the shotgun bit a little. I'm not holding myself up as an expert, but I am currently in the process of doing my due diligence for a home defense orriented purchase. And so I've been consuming hours of expert opinion on the matter, specifically in combat shooting, very recently. If I had to boil that down, the thought is essentially 00 buck shot is the closest thing to an immediate stop you can expect in an urban setting. If the majority of pellets hit the upper torso, they're gone. But, simultaneously, you need to understand that the dispersion of pellets is much much tighter than people think. Not enough that you don't need to exercise caution in respect to random "flyers" or stray pellets veering off course and hitting an innocent third party, that is still a concern. But tight enough that from the perspective of attempting to make a good hit on target you should act like it's a rifle when shooting room to room. There's no pulling the trigger twice and clearing the room.

Addendum on caliber. A caliber refers to the diameter of the bullet in 100ths of an inch. A 45 cal. Is 45/100inch. a bullet 1 inch wide is a 100 caliber. 10 inch wide is a 1000 caliber, but we would never call it that, that's dumb. ( we would probibly just use metric) 50 caliber is half an inch. Conversion rates 40 caliber = 10mm. 38 cal = 9mm, 50 caliber = 12.7ish mm
