Looking at the painting after conservation, I am led to wonder if this might be a portrait of Edmund Kean (1787-1833), the famed British actor of the early 19th century. The portrait seems to have a number of similarities with contemporary images of Kean: although most remaining images of him are engravings, the eyes and the line of the nose stand out. The character could possibly be Shylock, although it would require more research to see if that actor played that character any time between 1812-1815.

When you were removing the overpsint from the collar you mentioned that it has been painted ontop of dirt. Did you need to take any further steps to remove the previous layer of dirt or did it just come off with the overpaint?
