Announcing a winner and rambling about Blood Meridian
🕑 Added 2024-09-21 17:34:23 +0000 UTCThank you all so much for voting on the next thing we cover here. This will likely be in a similar format to how we recently looked at 'Longlegs'. I just put together this little video in response to your voting and to have a ramble about Blood Meridian. It’s just an unscripted podcasty thing but my head is so full of Blood Meridian I just thought it would be easy to get out.
Format is as follows:
-Looking through all your suggestions/votes and picking the winner
-Brief and terrible synopsis of Blood Meridian
-Spinning a wheel to decide on a Blood Meridian topic to discuss more closely
-Discussing said topic
I’d also like to draw your attention to the post two below this one. I put out an Arcane Trailer reaction just before I went away, but I didn’t want to spam anyone with email notifications from posting twice so I turned off the option to alert you all for it. So have a look for that if you’re interested.
And lastly, I love how much engagement the ‘what do you want us to cover’ posts get so we can say safely they’re here to stay. Please don’t feel disheartened if your suggestion isn’t picked. I haven’t seen a single bad suggestion and it’s my hope we’ll get to them all eventually. I’m so thrilled that we’re building a little community here and I’m going to look for further ways to get you guys involved in the process in the future. Regarding Suspiria, people seem clear on the 2018 version. Should I watch the older version first or is it better to just go in blind?
Thank you all.

I've only read Blood Meridian once so I'd love a deep dive before I read it again 👍

Agree about NOPE.

Suspiria vid just dropped above - I loved it!

That's really good to hear dude, I never know quite how people are engaging with the book/how much time to spend on visuals so that's actually very helpful.

This makes me so happy to hear Caroline. It is still very intense but it didn't depress me nearly as much as the Road did. I actually had a very similar experience with the movie. I've never watched it again after the first viewing because it was just so bleak. I have since read the book and yeah, much much worse lol.

I think we have to treat Blood Meridian as one of the 'all time complete guides' it's not going to be come around quickly so the more work we do in the coming months/years the more prepared I'll be when the time does come.
Caroline
I’m torn because I would LOVE a complete guide to blood meridian, but the podcast style videos lend themselves to quicker production time and I love the format, so I really don’t think you could go wrong either way!

Well you’ve fully convinced me to read Blood Meridian! My dad had me read The Road when I was about 12 and it was the first book I’d ever read that filled me with kind of an indescribable feeling of dread and black depression, I couldn’t stop thinking about it for weeks afterward. I’ve avoided Cormacs other books in the years since because that feeling was so intense, but the passages you posted here were so beautiful. Thanks for this breakdown!

For sure. I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's a very complete horror film on so many levels. Excited to hear your thoughts.

Thanks for a great show. As a fan of Cormac I’d love to see you cover some more of his work (or Blood Meridian in greater detail). As you’re covering a book, I wouldn’t worry too much about the visuals. I was listening thru Patreon with screen off and treated it like a podcast which worked perfectly for the format (for movies I would likely be looking for more visually as reference).

Yeah 100% it's such a struggle to get into them at first, and I have no understanding of Spanish either so I'm frequently going to my phone to translate stuff too. Eventually though I fell in love with it, it kind of feels like unlocking something esoteric when it does all start to 'click' into place. Super excited to watch Suspiria dude!

It's probably terrible, I haven't seen it in years, but I did really enjoy the movie!

Watch both, Novum, as Luca's 2018 version is a deliberate inverse in some aspects, while never completely leaving Dario Argento's source material--

This is great. Thank you. I've attempted reading this many times and can't get through it. I don't generally care for McCarthy's egregious run-ons and lack of punctuation, so it's difficult for me to commit my attention span reading this after work (brain is usually burnt to shit by then).

Go in blind with Suspiria 2018. There are similarities between the films but the newer one is really its own story. The older one is a classic though and also worth seeing as a movie buff.

I will go back and find that Mandy video, I thought I had delved deep into your archives but I must’ve missed it. X

I appreciate the Novum tittle card upon opening. Now on with the show!
