This part of town's gone to the dogs

No one lives there, all the buildings are overgrown, and apparently some swear that anyone who gets far enough in transforms into a dog. Implausible, but it was true that an inordinate number of wild dogs seemed to be coming and going from the abandoned district, begging, playing, barking at all hours of the night.
She marched in on purpose, leaving a trail of clothes behind her as she went, in front of the dumbfounded onlookers. If the rumors weren't true, she knew it'd be a sheepish walk of shame back, but no one with anything left to lose would do something so foolhardy in the first place.
She knew what she wanted...and in a few short minutes, as fur blanketed her form and she panted and yowled in ecstasy, she got exactly that.
