Toby is an independent scholar, curator, an expert on arms and armor, as well as a historical advisor for movies and TV. Ahead of a new series of Expert Reacts videos starring Toby, we caught up with the man as he donned his suit of armour for a recent event in the UK.
Our chat covered everything from his thoughts on the historical accuracy of Ridley Scott movies to his excitement for checking out Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2! Oh, and classic adventure movie, A Knight’s Tale gets several mentions, so look out for that too…
Don't forget, as an Extended Episode patron you get an extra long video with a bunch of extra content, a week earlier than the main feed, and it's ad-free.

The comment about fighting being exhausting whether you're in armour or not is very real. Even in the highly abstracted context of modern Olympic style fencing, a bout doesn't go more than 3 minutes of actual fencing time without a break because otherwise it'd be too exhausting to do more than one or two bouts in a row. During each point though? You almost don't notice the extra exertion - it feels the same whether it's at 80% or 100% intensity. Sometimes the higher intensity actually feels easier because you're getting an adrenaline boost. The fatigue from that wearing off is pretty heavy, though. Feels like you've done a full 12 hours of hard labour but it only took 15 minutes.
