Shorter main events were also more common pre Tanahashi. In the 90s, and 00s main events would often go like 9 minutes and a lot of them were fantastic.

Well the most famous short Njpw match is probably Vader vs Inoki. Vader was introduced as this new foreign menace, and beat Inoki in 6 minutes or so. Which pissed off fans so bad cause they felt cheated out of a good match (the actual ME was supposed to be Choshu vs Inoki, which was changed in the middle of the show) just to see their hero Inoki squashed instead, that they started rioting. After that NJPW was banned from Sumo Hall for a while.
