I think its kind of clever. Like Kawada going in with a the mindset 'i cant beat him in a normal way so i try to my best to yank his head of'.

- So this was Kawada's first shot at the belt, here he was looking to do what Misawa wasn't able to do yet, in both win the triple crown as well as beat Jumbo in a triple crown match. - The ref was stopping it because he was air constricting his airflow, and not the bloodflow. Air chokes are illegal (or really specifically chokes that target the windpipe are illegal). Rules used to matter before the WWF came along, got rid of the tag rope, allowed everyone to punch, and made air chokes legal. Now rules just don't matter anymore in mainstream wrestling. - The Kawada falling reverse elbow drop is a homage to Tenryu, who was Kawada's mentor, they tagged together in the late 80s, Kawada wore yellow because of him, too. - This is a very unique match in the grand scheme of kings road, focused almost entirely in submissions, and on the mat. It adds a lot imo, because it makes the big bombs mean so much more later in the match. Kawada tried to use the same strategy from the tag match we watched last week (wear Jumbos down to eventually lock in a sub) but when it didn't work he got desperate, going for the top rope Tenryu elbows which got countered, and the powerbomb which Jumbo escaped from. And when it became a bombfest, Kawada just wasn't equipped enough at this point to battle the ace, showing he was a step behind Misawa who was able to defeat Jumbo in his first big match with the ace, which is something that would play into their relationship.
