STRIFE - THE BIG SCORE
🕑 Added 2023-11-27 17:50:59 +0000 UTCFINALLY, ANOTHER DOOM ENGINE GAME! The one I have the least experience with because believe it or not, I even played Hexen more than Strife. Strife was one of those games I heard about before playing and probably avoided until the early-to-mid 2000's when I was curious about it and probably played it in the worst way possible, my young brain not being able to comprehend the nuances of not shooting things in the face immediately. Who would design a game where you didn't shoot things in the face as soon as you saw them? Sierra? Infocom? Did Douglas Adams have a hand in this? He was always a smartass who would do something like that.
Before anyone mentions it, I am aware of the typo in the intro section - "plenned" instead of "planned" - and I left it in as a Patreon Exclusive Bonus™ because I didn't feel like re-exporting the video again today. This also gives patrons the exclusive privilege of breaking my balls about it.
I did another export this morning already because I realized last night that I called Forbes Corporate Warrior "DOS Trash." I wrote that in the script and then spent 2 hours setting up a Windows 95 virtual machine in order to run it so I could get footage for this video and couldn't allow such an unplanned error to make it into the cut. Shameful, really.
Nightdive's port (Veteran Edition) confused me a bit since I've played through it once before and I recall using ZDoom for older playthroughs, possibly DOS at one point because a port didn't even exist when I first played this game. I hardly remember. I understand people's fondness for Strife even if I was never the biggest fan of it. It's a fascinating game that probably deserved better recognition. And some of the most fascinating parts of it got cut in the remaster! I want punishment, damn it!

Or if you want one of those fancy colored names that everyone gets now if they want. The credits in the video are usually a couple of days behind the actual patron list so if you don't see your name, it will be in the next upload.

Thank you, Civvie, very cool.

Star Wars: Dark Forces. The sewer count went from 43 to 137 when he wanted to kill the joke.

It's one of the best episodes you've done Civvie, glad this little gem of a game got some spotlight - it's beyond amazing that it's from 1996. Also, I believe that this episode now holds the record for the highest amount of sewer count in a single video, correct me if I'm wrong. PS. Needs more Python.

Great video as always! I’d like to formally request Half-Life 2 for a future video. You’ve made excellent HL and Hunt Down The Freeman entries. Let’s complete the series lol!
Civvie
I didn’t see a ton of stuff that I would want to cover and there’s plenty I already have. As it stands, I’m trying to cover only the really noteworthy stuff as I see it since there are so many new boomshoot releases.

Any plans on doing a realms deep 2023 video Civvie? Or was there not enough interesting output this year?
Far2noble
iv been waiting for this video for years
Civvie
I have no plans for a video for it as I don’t have much to say. Same for a roundup since there are so many different things coming out. I’d rather focus on longer form videos with more interesting topics I haven’t touched on before.
I live... again
Hey Civvie. Any thoughts on Ion Fury’s expansion Aftershock? Do you think it will get its own video or be part of a round-up?

Just a couple of days ago, The Algorithm recommended that I watch Gmanlives’ Strife video from 8 years ago. Now this... 🤔 I wonder if Strife was originally released globally - I was 13 when it came out, and I think even our local gaming media completely and utterly missed it on release. Great video, though! 🙂 On another note, it’s somewhat comforting to know that in 2022, at least one version of Beavis finally scoring is now canon. What a world.

Civvie! You are The Man! Today totally sucked and you came to the rescue. I was pleasantly surprised to see a mini Romero-book-review. Bonus mini-episode for Sigil II maybe? And then the season finale? This'll be the end of year 7 for you... wow. I am glad you are still here. Jazz Jackrabbit Megaspecial ft. Jazz Jackrabbit Christmas for this year? Bookend the year with 90s Epic tentpoles, know what I'm sayin'?

For ages, I've been trying to remember the name of this game, which I last played in the early 2000s as a kid. Thanks for the reminder, Civvie.

Yes! Finally! Strife, once you figure out it's weirdness, is one of the best Doom engine experiences ever imo. Also the game has secret areas... Barely any, mind you, but they are there!
Dénes Hliva
Ooh, i like this! Strife is fun, its still impressive for how much they did with the doom engine so long before mods and wads
Mario_bland
For simliar "I NEED TO SHOOT EVERYTHING" reasons I never got into this one. Glad someone who has more braincells than my Mountain Dew addled mind got to it for me!
Civvie
Yes, despite the first 20 seconds of the video, this is about Strife.
