Dive Roll Animation (WIP)
🕑 Added 2021-03-20 00:12:50 +0000 UTCHere's some dive roll action for one of Ayla's evasive moves. This is one of the few animations for the game where I needed to shoot reference. Hopefully none of the neighbors noticed when I was doing dive rolls in the backyard last Fall! It was in the process of doing those reference videos when I discovered that getting the spear back into the neutral idle position gave that aggressive little swipe at the end, which is a nice little attack bonus on the end of the move.
The move has been HEAVILY re-timed to be more effective for the game, since the real action was considerably slower and clunkier (despite feeling fast as hell while doing it). Even now it needs a touch more re-timing, because I think the transition into the dive needs one more quick frame to pad it out. It was the spear that made it something where reference was required, because I sincerely was sure how that'd impact a normal dive roll. And it really does change the move a bit, so it was reference well-shot.
This stage in the animation is the first pass clean-up on pencils (unfinished), giving some definition to the masses and forms beyond the stick figure level stuff you seem in the middle. It won't be until the second pass that I add stuff like the breasts, hair, and loin cloth physics. And the third/final pass is final inks and colors.
Fortunately, this is one of the LAST key moves she needs for her basic controller setup. The only one left after this is a running jump, which is comparatively much easier work.
