Eidetic Eidolon

Convenient? Feudal systems of government are prone to corruptions and their systems of law are often confusingly arcane. People getting screwed because the emperor's family member wants it to happen is pretty par for the course imo.

Froyo Baggins

This just seemed...Convenient? For his entire family to be stripped of all power and position according to codified law. Yes I do get that codified generational punishment was a thing in China... Usually only for treason, and only the death penalty, and in western nations you might have something like this loss of position for close relatives, but any of that would be case by case based on the judgement of the court, king, and/or council, possibly additional measures required if it was England in certain time periods for example. The kid isn't even an HEIR. For actual hereditary noble relatives to be punished for his display of cowardice and insubordination would be vanishingly unlikely almost anywhere with a hereditary system of nobility...again POSSIBLE exception of certain periods of Imperial China if his actions were deemed to put Imperial Family at risk. Literally everything else about the setting and culture shown are Western though. EDIT: In fact, without the his relatives having the opportunity to disavow him and let him accept his fate, I don't see any possibility of ANY of them being punished....Maybe the uncle received some degree of punishment for his involvement...though with the main charge as cowardice and insubordination which he was completely uninvolved with, well he could be dismissed from his position...

Eifer

Jesus, the drama about the collateral punishment. It's a monarchy in a medieval world for christ sake. Hell, the MC was DRAFTED as a conscript, as a CHILD, because he met the stat requirements. No leeway. No choice. Nothing. Absolutely legal. This shouldn't be so damn surprising to anyone by now.

Maakolo

Nobility can be regained, and elders wouldnt care about such worldly stuff all that much either

Rui Lourenço

I think it's solely because cowardice in the presence of an imperial family member directly endangers this member. And that's a big no no. Running away normally? Kinda bad. Running away when you're defending a princess? Really bad. Specially for a noble scion, since they're all sworn, directly or indirectly, to the imperial family. Commoner soldiers just get a few months jail and a public lashing, harsh but not overly so and I doubt this would ever be prosecuted in the case of a simple rout.

Maakolo

If people are triggered by this level of ethics violations then I wonder how they would react to the average chinese fantasy novel...

Eltirno

Consider that "cowardice in the face of the enemy" is a capital crime, punished by summary execution in a lot, if not all modern armies. Definitely was the case during WW1 and WW2. If anything, the little shit got off easy.

Shane Kelly

In an absolute monarchy anything that endangers a member of the ruling family is grounds for death. If Reivyn and Refix weren't monsters Kefira would've been killed or captured. There's a reason why so few monarchies are left irl.

Tristan R Mitchell

I mean, they had oversight. The Imperial Family is, by definition, oversight. The only persons that can overrule this ENTIRELY LEGAL AND BY THE BOOK decision are the King, the Queen, and maybe the Crown Prince. Two of those three, the higher two, already said "have fun". Further, as a Noble, they have additional responsibilities and greater consequences. If they don't want those responsibilities and potential consequences they can most likely voluntarily put down their title, reverting to a "commoner". While this would lose them anything entailed with their title, they would have no more work than anyone else.

SodaBoBomb

Except Kefira was only there for training. It wasn't even in their own Kingdom. I'm not even sure it was in their own Empire.

Shane Kelly

The punishment for cowardice is only worse for nobles. This is probably because most if not all of the command will be nobles. If a commander is a coward it'll cause a route so the punishment is worse. Death penalty for imperial family being present is probably cause if they're present it's a more important battle.

SodaBoBomb

Right I'm not saying it shouldn't be harsher for Nobles, I'm confused on why it's harsher based solely on who happens to be present

Maakolo

Cowardice in the face of the Enemy can be caused by the result of a rout. So its not completely reasonable to punish someone extremely harshly for something that may not have been in their hands. When it comes to nobility though, things change. The Nobility is an institution that is derived from the noble contract. In essence nobles are commoners afforded certain privileges in return for taking on certain responsibilities from their Sovereign. The most fundamental of those responsibilties are the those connectdd to martial responsibilities. They support their Sovereign by fielding forces, and are expected to expend their lives for this purpose regardless of the situation. A noble who wont die for their sovereign family is a traitor and guilty of the highest treason.

R2k Thief

Hmm, didn’t they have retired family in T5? Wonder if he just set up a nice turncoat family in his gf back yard? While at war with a superior force.

R2k Thief

My biggest issues is no oversight and they tricked the kid with no representation ( he’s a dumb jealous kid who tricked his family). Oryin and is uncle should have been punished. But the clear over bearing way that it happened makes the so called hero look more like a villain.

ZaA

All these people whining about collateral punishment. As nobility it's your job to be held to a certain standard. If your kids ends up like this, you fucked up hard. That's just how it is, they're a political entity. If they just punish oryin, he himself is shamed, but still gets to live at home living the life of a noble with all of the perks and benefits. It's a waste and stupid to punish some soldiers to watch him and make sure he's not getting help from his family, so that's a no. Then, if you just punish oryin then his family is shamed for having that kid, and they'll likely go for revenge. They still have everything and, "hell, our son tried to ___(kill, rape, murder, etc, since the punishment doesn't matter since they're not being held accountable) why not try again?" If only 1 person at a time is held accountable then let's just keep trying, starting with family members we don't care about. They HAVE to hold generations accountable in order to both say, "hey, you need to raise your kids better or at least control them," and in order to remove any chances of nepotism and revenge or else it's not a real punishment. Punishing generations is a way to have nobles self-police because they have something to lose if they don't. Which, given all nobles benefits and mightier than thou mindsets, is one of the few ways they CAN be policed efficiently. They're not above the law, they're supposed to be an example of the laws, they're held to a higher standard due to the benefits of their titles. It just is what it is. Applying our modern standards and low-born average joe families to real nobility and power is silly.

SodaBoBomb

I'm...not entirely sure what the point of this was? Why did this need to happen inside the jail? All of this could have been done regardless of Reivyn staying arrested. Also, why is the initial punishment for Cowardice in the Face of the Enemy so light, but then randomly gets worse just based on who's present? Finally, not sure how I feel about the collateral punishment to those who had nothing to do with the incident. Other than raising a coward. It would be one thing if Reivyn carried out the flogging and then Oryins family tried to get back at Reivyn or something. As it stands, I simply don't know what all this was necessary. Reivyn could've just let Kefira get him out, as is her right as Princess. Then he could've called the Tribunal from anywhere. Or hell, just challenged the little shit to a duel. TYFC, your writing itself is as good as ever. Maybe following chapters will clear some of my confusing up.

George Hicken

They’re stripped of position, not wealth (at least that wasn’t mentioned). There are likely innocents impacted, in that they lose a privileged lifestyle they inherited. Given they inherited due to the actions of others in their family, it seems fair they can lose that position due to actions of others. I suspect that if someone in the family had won a separate title through merit that title would not be affected.

Joshua LaBarge

Have a pleasant morning. 😂 Lol

Nef Mccrimmon

The face slap

Rui Lourenço

To be honest, I find blaming parents for the actions of their kids far more acceptable than the reverse.

Magisch

Oryin bit off so much more then he could chew it's actually ridiculous.

Raymond Mouton

If the government depicted were anything other than a “direct monarchy”, I would agree with you, Alex, however, in the case of a “direct monarchy” the monarch makes the rules. In this case I am pleased that the punishment depicted followed what was written in “the law” to the letter. Also in a “direct monarchy” it is more common for positions to be granted based on nepotism rather than merit, the manor being seized is likely because that manor comes with the hereditary title of baron, and as such is no longer the families property once the title has been vacated. In this scenario, the punishment as is, is per “the law” any additional case brought against the uncle “former magistrate” would be considered after those charges were brought against them specifically, and the punishment for those additional charges would be on top of those already levied. If the “former magistrate” had been the only one charged, he more than likely would have lost his job anyway. “Collective responsibility” is very common in historical accounts of “direct monarchies” and “despotic” governments in general, which is part of the reason why, in the modern era, those government types are very much frowned upon by the rest of the world…

Magisch

I suspect Reyvin is pursuing two different objectives here. First, to handle this and put Oriyn and his corrupt relatives in their place within the framework of laws, and second to send a clear and unambiguous message to any other people who get any ideas, that just because he doesn't usually engage in palace game nonsense doesn't mean he can't.

NJ Reed

Thanks for the chapter

Alex

I don't like it. I hate collateral punishment. It's very satisfying to see Oryin suffer, and maybe he doesn't have any innocent relatives affected, but what if he did? The person who actually does the crime should be the one punished, not family. Taking his title (and if he had kids, their title because their titles are based on his) thats fine. Taking his parents title is borderline. Kinda their fault for raising a brat? Kinda not. What if he had innocent siblings? Aunts uncles. Maybe take away titles, OK. Those titles are hereditary and they didn't work to gain them. But official positions are earned. Or at least they should be. Taking those away just cause some distant relative screwed up is wrong. (the magistrate should loose his job based on his own actions in this, not because of oryins punishment)

ZaA

That was so satisfying lol. Ty for the chapter

Freedcats

Ok, that was awsome.

Sarah Ott

There was an entire squad made up of NCO’s seeing to the tasks Jekle sent them through Reivyn. I think you want "Revyn sent them through Jekle."

Gordon

God damn, ate him up and left nothing behind not even crumbs

Flusspferd

I can’t make up my mind about this. Sure, it‘s vastly better for Reivyn to be rid of the entire family, on the other hand they didn‘t seem so bad. They are schemers, no doubt about it, but that‘s par for the course with nobility and they didn’t seem to have any nefarious intentions towards him. So in essence, they just got fucked without really doing anything.

Vralnii

Woohoo, thanks for the chapter!

Trasen56

I like thar Reivyn took advantage of Orins tendency to panick in order to get him to ruin his while family.

MoonMiner

Reivyn just got himself a house

Disclancer

Wow, well played! Just a comment, it should maybe say a generation either side rather than 3 generations, just for clarity. Otherwise it reads as if the grandfather should be effected.

Arakrin

Damn. That was a beautiful checkmate.
