**Sefia's** mouth formed a line, but she didn't speak any further. It was her job to make sure things went according to Silfa's wishes, but Silfa wasn't here, and Kefira wasn't going to bend. The head maid was chosen as the lead for a reason, and she understood when to push and when to back down.

Eifer

Totally with Bean here. That stuff always triggers me. Civilian oversight is important, but there's a time and place for people to voice their opinions. In front of foreign dignitaries and subordinates is not one of those places. And considering that she IS Silfa's agent, she should know this. If she's the agent of a head of state, she isn't dumb. But that was a really dumb move.

Carl Mason

I specifcally failed/refused to argue those points because I wasn't arguing those points. But since you asked: the Head Maid's position and appointment as "Head Maid" suggests that her role and position are explicitly subservient to Kefira as an Imperial Family Member, and further to Reivyn in his position as Imperial Liaison. If she was intended to be present in an official capacity as Silfa's agent I dare say she would have been appointed to a position suggesting that in title, perhaps "Agent of the Queen" or somesuch. The position of "Lord of the King's Bedchamber" was once a respected and sought agter position here on Earth, cupbearer, etc. so it is possible that her position has unknown, counterintuitive perks, i wouldnt expect them to encompass what amounts quite effectively to sedition. I also didn't bother refuting his point on casual brutality because I wasn't saying that she should be or even would be, in fact I explicitly stated that she wouldn't be in this empire. But it was stated in chapter that this woman is Silfa's agent on the mission. Presumably, until we are told otherwise, that is not an official position and is more intended to be a personal agent to continue her games with Reivyn and Kefira (my personal belief), or help remind her politely to be polite on her diplomatic mission. My point was not that she needs to be punished (or how), nor that she should not have said what she said. My point was that she should not have spoken up the way that she did. She challenged the authority of the leader of her diplomatic mission. Publicly, in front of people who should never be given anything but the highest impression of her leaders. This is inappropriate behavior, my point in its entirety. But we will find out how much or even if this is an issue. Soon.

Kyfe

Yeah, just getting home from my son's jui jitsu class. About 1/2 way done with the next chapter and finishing it upnow

Steven

Any update for us kyfe?

Derek Walker

Skills shown later are only ever included if they have leveled. Presumably, he hasn’t leveled them. Which at least makes sense for assassination

Also, two of his skills he got in chapter 119 have been left off every other status page. Infiltration and assassination.

When are we gonna get to see his step and skill levels up again? It’s been a while.

NJ Reed

Thanks for the chapter

As to the new Empire being offended, they are being invaded. And Kefira's Empire sent help. To take offense publically would to be risking the revoking of that help. Unlikely. Not because a single mercenary company matters. But because, why insult an ally that is either a peer or superior ( as Kefira's Empire hasn't been invaded they are in the stronger positiion ). You are also ignoring many other things in your comment "Challenging their decisions publicly does exactly that, and nothing else." There is nothing that ever had a single meaning. You ignore my assertion about the maid's possible portion as the Empress's agent, or correcting a teenager, or Aezy Ken's point about casual brutality. If your argument is "I am right and everyone else is wrong" ... It's not really a debate anymore. (Not that I expect any formal debate rules to live strong on the internet. Please don't inundate this with comments on my naivety.) In conclusion, and this is a conclusion as my vacation ends tmrw and I won't have time for amusing internet debates, ... I think I am right and you are wrong. Hah. But really, the only thing that matters in this debate is what Kyfe thinks. It is his world and his story. (Not that I am not certain he uses these debates to improve his story by hammering out the functions of minor points of protocol among Tier 4 Empire's Service Staffs.). Have a good night.

Luciaron

Its interesting that war between nations is so rare here, but I guess everything is too far apart or there’s plenty of resources. It’s kinda funny where Rev is in his full military mode thinking about strategy and tactics when a single high level person could just pop on and wreck everything.

Aezy Ken

I can see many scenarios where it's perfectly okay for her to act the way she did, one of them being depicted in the story. I don't really have an issue with it, just that I also see where Carl Mason is coming from. An outsider also can't know what hats the Maid wears. Maybe it's a fucking princess undercover for life experience lmao no way to know. If you aren't the Royal family, you shut up and accept it if it REALLY WAS an issue lol

Aezy Ken

My issue is that while a less forgiving liege is technically accurate, it is a massive understatement and doesn't properly convey the kind of difference required for her head to be lopped off right then and there. It's like saying the extinction of mankind would be sub-optimal.

Carl Mason

It has been done, both on earth in history and in many fictions. But I did say "a less forgiving liege," with her place in the staff it wouldn't happen to her, not in this empire, but it is a valid point. You don't publicly undermine the perceived authority of the face of your mission for anything. Challenging their decisions publicly does exactly that, and nothing else.

Vralnii

Agreed Aezy Ken, while we have seen that kind of casual brutality in this story, it has been from the Branded Invaders not from Kefira's Empire. Historically, I am sure it has happened, but considering the level, skills level, tier, and general system rank the head maid to Kefira must surely be; it is unlikely she would face death for a mistake at the level of a social gaffe. That would inspire fear, not respect and loyalty. And that whole argument discounts the point that I do not think it was a mistake.

Aezy Ken

Phew. Edgy. I agree that a maid, whatever her roles, wouldn't speak up in front of foreign dignitaries or anything of the sort. It'd be pretty weird. I think you'd have to be a psycho or very callous liege to count it as treason and "cut her down where she stands." lol that's straight up villain behavior. if she was out of turn according to the liege, the liege would take care of the issue by correcting her, or more likely, the head of the maids or w.e would handle the correction. Why would you just murder a maid for something that little? You gotta check your preconceptions because that's not something any decent person does. Liege/lord/king/peasant.

Vralnii

I dunno, I can see it either way. It is a matter of protocol, granted; but Kyfe is creating the protocol as the story is told. I readily admit I have no clue what the actual historical protocol would have been, but I have seen it many different ways in fiction. I guess in this case it rather depends on if the head maids position as an agent of the Empress is undercover or public. If it is supposed to be secret then I could agree with your position. But if it is public, then that changes things. It wasn't simply the head maids opinion ... it becomes the head maids opinion of the Empress' position on that topic. Regardless of any of that though, I am still of the opinion that though Kefira is indeed not a little kid, it still makes sense that the head maid could opine on her decision. But it would be a matter of protocol set by Kefira's parents, rather than custom.

Carl Mason

She is not a child, she is young. There is a difference. In any case, the major issue isn't about her speaking up. The major issue is that she spoke against her in front of others, specifically a foreign official that they want to respect them, and especially Kefira, as dignitaries and mercenary commanders. This maid just worked to undermine Kefira in public. A less forgiving liege might count that as treason and cut her down where she stands.

TheeGreenBean

I mean I understand that she’s Silfa’s agent but like someone else said speaking publicly against her like that undermines her authority and reputation. Not only that but if the imperial liaison who is the captain of the mercenary company is being looked down on by the prince when he talks I don’t see how there is any scenario in which the maid is supposed to be trying to dictate the plans of the princess, especially when speaking in front of foreign royalty.

Carl Mason

Yeah, she definitely should not be challenging her nominal mistress' stated plans in front of outside parties. That behavior really undermines her authority and impression thereof. Her behavior was utterly inappropriate, I didn't notice her leaning in to quietly converse with her or anything like that. Now, if that is The Plan then that is fine, inasmuch as Silfa has something in mind for the two to fight past in their relationship like she has been doing.

Vralnii

Plus Kefira is still technically a kid. Maids correct kids all the time, even royalty.

Megabadman

@TheeGreenBean When I read that part I took it as the equivalent of being Butler, There’s a precedent of butlers having a certain level of authority in Noble Houses. Speaking against her plans in public…I predict a heated conversation with Kefira and her maid

Maakolo

I think youre underestimating the weight of maids. Theyre not just servants to serve tea, theyre capable, educated, and respected noble women in their own right. In their role as maids they they may join discussions between their master and others, and this isnt unusual.

Kyfe

I should be more clear. I'll go back and make an adjustment. She's not just a head maid, she's Silfa's agent, and she has some authority. Without Silfa being there, though, her authority is basically just offering suggestions. What's she going to do about it? Lol.

TheeGreenBean

Seems a bit weird that the head maid would publicly speak against kefira’s plans. She’s a maid, not some official dignitary
