Kelly was his refuge, but she also seemed very open to many of the ideas women like Ms. Belmont mentioned. She had taken him in, while also not reacting the way he’d expected toward Ms. Belmont. If anything, the two women seemed to have some sort of strange understanding. Chad didn’t want to think about it. He slid to the edge of the bed and dropped lightly to the floor. Kelly had left the door ajar for him, and he walked out of the room, on a quest for breakfast.
Chad pushed the gnawing worries out of his head and gazed down the hallway. He liked to imagine he lived in a sort of mansion with vaulting high ceilings. It made it easier to cope with his small stature and was almost believable when he was alone in the house. In the corner of his mind lurked the memory of shrinking, the memory of Ms. Belmont’s dark laughter, the memory of his dwindling role in the office.
Chad shook his head. He didn’t want to deal with these thoughts. The world was outside of the house and he was safe here, right? He headed toward the refrigerator.
